I noticed when I get on the throttle hard & I am manually shifting (5000 + rpms), my trans. slips when shifted into 3rd gear. Under normal driving it shifts perfectly either manual or auto. I have a auto/manual shift kit & a new 9.5" Dynamic convertor. KD linkage seems to be adjusted O.K. I run a deep pan with new fluid, filter & trans cooler.

Your initial thoughts..

The 3rd gear clutch pack is slipping , I had the same issue on my truck.

I love that auto/manual shift kit , ALL automatic valve bodies can be shifted manually and hold the gear, well maybe not all , the one I have in my truck WILL shift back and forth from 2nd to 3rd when held in 2nd and it's not pretty when it happens , but it's the nature of the VB I have .

Is this a rebuilt trans or a high mileage unit you installed the shift kit in ?

The trans. was gone threw about 7500 mi. ago. when the shift kit was installed. Just seems odd that it only slips under those conditions.

I'm no expert but it seems that shifting manually at 5000+ rpms would be extreme. By extreme, I don't mean beyond the scope of its capability, but beyond "normal" mechanical performance(Not out of the ordinary for hp driving). If its going to slip, thats when it's going to slip; under extreme conditions.

It's high load on the clutch pack and it not being able to hold the torque , it may have been slipping all along and it is just getting progressively worse that now you are able to notice it .

Who built it ? either way it's not going to get better on it's own .

What fluid are you using also ?

A knowledgable friend of mine went threw the trans. several yrs. ago. I'm using type "F" fluid.

Looks like a good time this winter to drop it & do a rebuild.

I agree , it's going to have to come out to fix it either way, once you overheat the clutches from slipping nothing is going to fix them other than replacement .

There is only 2 clutch packs in a 727 and the front clutch pack is your problem. It is also applied in reverse but the pressuer is much higher in reverse so it may not slip yet in reverse. Since 3rd gear uses much less pressuer then reverse it will slip in 3rd gear before it will in reverse. Ron

The front clutch pak has a seal on the piston that can be tricky to get in sometimes, I've pulled them out and part of the seal has been folded back on itself, this may have caused your problem also because you are losing pressure there.

I agree the outter piston seal could be torn. I wrap a plastic tie around the seal and place the piston in the freezer when there tough to install, some slip right in, some don't. Also you should be using a 4 clutch drum, not a 3 clutch. This increases the holding capacity 33%
