Hey all,

I'm going to order parts to re-do the front end of my 68 charger over the winter. I'm building it as a driver, not a performance car or show car. I'd like to eventually have disc brakes on the front. I had some scary situations in my last Charger that only had factory drums. (Everyone else on the road could stop WAY faster than I could).

Would it be less expensive to do discs now as part of a front end rebuild as opposed to adding them later? I realize the labor saving is a no-brainer, since I'll have the control arms and ball joints off. But would I save any money by doing a disc upgrade while I have the whole thing apart? i.e. - are there parts that I would buy while doing a standard front end upgrade that would not be necessary if I converted to discs down the road?

Also - I don't want to spend $2,000 on a disc kit. I think I've seen some for around $700. Should I be leary of the low-price kits?

Thanks!

The parts remain the same the only real advantage is you won't have the beat on your new ball joints to seperate them from the spindle that will need to be replaced...You can do discs alot cheaper than $700.00...73-76 A body spindles typically sell for $100-$150.00 new rotors are $35.00 per side loaded calipers 40.00 per side Bearings & seals $60.00, hoses $30.00 = total less than $400.00 These are factory OE brake parts that are better than the OE 66-69 Disc parts, also better than the 70-71 OE brake parts....

I purchased spindles from a guy off ebay with a list of stock parts for the upgrade. Rotors, bearings, hoses, calipers, new master cylinder, and everything else for less than 400. Pm me if you want the info. On my site under suspension you can see the brakes and suspension. I did get the street strip kit from just suspensions, everything bolted up nice. Good luck

Shop around. You can pick all the pieces for around $300-400. Aside from spindles and caliper brackets, everything else can be bought new/remanufactured from any parts store.

I am putting the SSBC kit (front disc brake kit) on my 69 Charger now.
I have the old stuff off,,,and have the new stuff on,,,the rotors,,calipers,,,,lines,,etc,,,,just have to put the MC on,,,,
I really like the kit,,,impressed with it,,,came with EVERYTHING,,,,didnt have to remove the spindles,,,

I was going to try and piece it together but am glad i got the kit....

total cost was $890 from JEGs to my door........

My car had drums all the way around ,,,and was SCARY...when it came to stopping,,,,,,,,,,cant wait to try out the disc brakes,,,,,,,,,,,

old..........

NEW>.....................

Did you replace the steel lines up to the proportioning valve, or just the flex line? Just curious what everyone else is doing?

I never did on my west coast cars. They have been operational all their live though.

Do you have a car that has been non operational for a while? Sitting low on brake fluid can really mess things up. And back east its much more common to rust out brake lines. More moisture out there to get into the brake fluid too.
