I don't want to have it sandblasted. Is there a good / easy way to strip paint from an exhaust manifold?

Something I can pick up locally?

Thx

Yes, sandblasting. If you want to get it down to bare metal for best paint adhesion, sandblast it.

Why do you not want to have it sand blasted, if I may ask?

If blasting is out of the question I would use aircraft stripper---available at most auto parts stores.

2 reasons, I was quoted $40, which seems high and more importantly to will take 2 extra days. Don't want to drop it off and then have to go pick it up.

Easy-Off oven cleaner, strips down to bare then looks new.

Second the oven cleaner, just make sure to get the NO HEAT version, but it will take it to bare metal and look new, used it many times. BTW, you can mask anything you dont want to get stripped with tin foil.

Easy Off sounds good, what process do you use? Or just follow directions like for an oven?

Oven cleaner works well, sandblast is the best way to go. Yeah you mentioned you don't want to do that but...it is the best way to go. Blast it, and it's ready to be coated.
If you already have an air compressor, you can get a cheap-O sandblaster from Harbor Freight.

For Easy Off method; put the parts in the sun for about an hour (just enough to warm up, DON'T cook it!), spray down, wait 5-6 minutes, quick scrub with a disposable brush, turn over, spray down, scrub again, wait 6-8 minutes, rinse with HIGH water pressure. Repeat if necessary.
You will have to prep the part for paint. Clean, clean, etc.

Death or Glory...it's just another story.

Does the Easy Off oven cleaner take the rust away?

Well, I tried the easy off, and it doesn't work very good. It really didn't do anything at all.

I guess sandblasting is the best solution.

And no, it doesn't remove rust. I'll hit it will some Ospho before painting.
