I've heard and read that moog is making some, most or all of their suspension parts offshore now. I haven't bought any in quite a while, but it's time to redo the front end on my challenger, and I'm wondering if their quality has become an issue. What's a good brand to look at instead? My car won't see a thousand miles a year, but I still want something I won't lose sleep over.

In order to know what you want, you'll probably have to find out what you don't want.

I wish I could help you with that question. I recently bought some new Moog front springs for my '87 D100 from rockauto.com. I took them out of the box and recycled it. I have not installed them yet. There are no markings on them that I can see to give me any clue as to where they were made, but if they were made under the Moog name I would hope they are a quality part

The last Moog ball joint I installed lasted less than 40,000 miles before failure(yep, broke and caused big troubles),much better than the recent Monroe shocks/struts. lot's of garbage being sold,I don't have an answer.

Try Raybestos Chassis. They might still be made here. Check with Bill Rolik, he is/was a dealer.

I think the most of the Raybestos chassis "premium" line is still made here. But the "economy" line is China and India. I used to work there. It's the same problem with rotors. There's just not enough buyers for the US made product to keep a plant going. Too many people just want cheap.

CarQuest still sells Raybestos chassis. At least for now. But since they've been bought by Advance that's likely to change.

The moog /trw/chassie engineering/rybestoe/dana/ , are all being made overseas, there are some old stock floating around but thats just the way it is.
wheather you buy your parts from car quest/ napa/ advance / rock auto/ autozone, your buying the same stuff, despite others who have a thinking other wise, some just want to believe that so n so parts are better or if I buy them from a dealer i get better parts,
if you believe any of it, I got some deal on ground in florida for sale cheap.
Just go where you recieve the best service, and whom happens to have a little knowlege behind that counter,
thats the only difference in parts stores today !

For well over a year now, I have noticed that the Moog and TRW suspension parts that I buy are made overseas. But the price has not come down.

And of course, the house brand of suspension parts are also made overseas. So I ask this question which is similar to what the OP is asking; Are name brand Chinese made suspension parts any better than parts house branded Chinese parts?

I know price is not always a reflection of quality. However, I see parts from raybestos " professional grade" and ac/delco running at a 50-75 percent premium over moog's "problem solver" line. I'm on good enough terms with my local (privately owned) parts store that I could order in 2 or 3 brands and compare...I know the last moog pieces I bought (for my daughter's sebring) were identical to the cheapest name in the store. But twice as much money.

That's what I use now as well when I have a choice.

And sometimes when stores change brands the new supplier comes in and reboxes everything on the shelves into the new brand boxes. So you never know for sure if what's inside the box matches the brand on the box.

Well, I've done internet searches on what I consider to be the name brands-all have various threads on different forums about being imported now. Their own websites don't mention anything about being US made. You'd think that would be a selling point. Not a rant, I suppose that's just how it is these days. I do have one more option, though- the stock front end on this car was rebuilt about seven or eight years, and less than a thosand miles ago, with a PST kit I bought in 2003. But I'm changing everything (welded k, lca's, uca's, t-bars, sway bar, strut rods, knuckles etc) and was just going to leave the old front end complete. I could reuse the stuff that came from PST, if they hadn't already switched to a cheaper supplier by then. Admittedly, if I can't find USA on the parts, I'll still be in the dark...

This is so well put. How many foundries do people think are out there producing forty year old out dated products. The market is driven by sales, it's that simple.

I just bought ball joints for my dart. My local parts store had Raybestos professional for about 200 dollars, the boxes were printed assembled in USA. I ended up ordering Moog joints from Summit for right at 100 dollars. The Moog boxes say made in the USA, not sure if its true. I would have to admit the Raybestos parts looked to be higher quality though. Wayne

A warranty is all fine and dandy on some things, but when a ball joint breaks it's not the same as a lifetime water pump failing. One of the part's guys at the local O'Reilly's put a Chinese ball joint in his Honda. It broke, so he decided it must have just been a defective one, so he put in another. It also broke...Then he went with Moog and it hasn't broke.

I've found Moog to be U.S.A or Mexican made.

The lower balljoints that came in my rebuild kit have slop in them already (Mcquay Norris IIRC). I ordered some replacements from the NAPA premium chassis line, and they look to be STOUTLY built pieces. I havent' installed them yet though. But everything that I've ever heard about this is good.

Dr. Diff sells suspension kits.
http://www.doctordiff.com/front-suspension-rebuild-kit.html

He mentioned they were from Elgin Industries.

I have 2 Challengers that need their front suspensions gone through.

Dr. Diff usually sells quality stuff so I'll be giving his kits a close look.
