It's been a while since I've been on any Mopar boards. Good to be back.

I'm considering going to a hydraulic roller over my solid lift cam this winter. I don't race the car anymore and don't plan to spin the motor over 6500 rpms. My car sits most of the time and I'm a little leery of valve spring fatigue with a solid lift set up. Maybe someone can educate me if I'm being paranoid?

This motor was built back in 2005 in a joint effort between Ryan Johnson and Scott Brown. Ryan did the heads and intake and Scott designed the cam. I did the install. I know Ryan is still in the business but what happened to Scott Brown?

Here is some info for you guys.

Small block 340 stroked to 416.
12.5 Compression; Indy 360-2 CNC heads 210 intake 165 Exhaust; Indy single plane intake cut down 1” for hood clearance; 1” HVH spacer; Turtle installed in the intake; Carter mechanical fuel pump
1050 Dominator
Crane HI-6 Ignition and coil; MSD distibutor Mech advance
Solid lift cam;
lobe lift Intake 388/Exhaust 390 1.6 rocker
Valve lift Intake 621/ Exhaust 624
Duration Intake 284/ Exhaust 302
@50 Intake 254/ Exhaust 266
Centerline Intake 108/ Exhaust 116
Lash Intake 12/ Exhaust 20
4 Speed car 4:10 gear 28” tire
Exhaust TTI headers 1 7/8 Primary; 3" X pipe; 3" Sintech Super Pro 9000 mufflers dumped at muffler.
Initial timing 22 degrees all in at 36 degrees (2200 rpms)
Car weighs 3420 with me in it.

This dyno sheet was done with a 950 HP holley and M1 intake. That carb and intake never worked very well for me as you can see on the afr in the dyno sheet is was pretty fat. I changed to the 1050 dominator and Indy intake after that and never went back to the dyno. The car did run better though.

If your plans are to run this on the street? I would be much more concerned of the 12.5- 1 compression ratio.

FWIW My 12.1.1 comp. BB only cranks bet. 170-175 psi and can drive around on 91 pump and race w/VP-100 unleaded........

Street duty only. Not much else I can do to get Comp down, running dome pistons. I don't have any detonation issue with 93 and 5 gallons of 100.

I talked about this with Ryan Johnson and Scott Brown when we did the cam and heads. They have the quench set right to help with the higher compression.

Hi Brett I followed your build at that time on mopartech with high interest. I think I had the w2 heads on my 408 at the time and was looking to move up to the indys which I now do have and use a solid roller with 260/269@50-.688/.714 on a 106 and it works great with 11.4 compression. I would look for something similar to your solid cam in a hydraulic. give bullet racing cams or hughes engines a call. either will get ya where you need to be. not sure where scott is now. last I talked to him he was building mod motors and its been awhile ago.

Long time no see, how have you been? I watched your videos, your Cuda running the number for sure.

I wasn't sure if just ordering a hydraulic with the solid cam numbers would actually be the same. Aren't the ramps a little steeper on the solids? I've been away so long I forgot just about everything.

yeah, welcome back. yes I believe they are more aggressive, but I bet bullet or hughes would have what you need. bullet may be able to regrind an old hydraulic if you have one for $125. my current cam is an old comp cam that I had reground by bullet to ryans specs for my 408. it was too big for my compression so I had them regrind it a second time to their(bullets) specs which where very close to hughes specs. finally, getting closer to that 10.00 and still on pump gas no power adders. I think something with 250's 260's@50 .600 or alittle under net lift on a 108 would work for you, but you should talk with the pro's on this. I use oil spray bars in my valve covers to make the springs live at .700 lift on the street.

I should probably give Ryan a call and see if he remembers my build. He might be able to steer me in the right direction. The motors coming out this winter anyway so maybe I'll just do new valve springs and leave it alone? Definitely time for some new gaskets and some fresh paint.

Here are a some decent pics of the car back from 05. Hasn't changed much other than a 4 link and some different tires.

Not sure the hydraulic roller lifters are worth it. I believe they've been plagued with failures. Might be safer just installing new springs & turning the car over every couple weeks.

That seems like a pain and I personally just turn my motor by hand every couple of weeks when I`m not driving much and start it every month otherwise..........

That's good info, I've been away so long I don't know what's good and what works now a days. If the hydraulic rollers aren't bullet proof I'll stay away. No big deal to do springs and I do start it usually once a month on average.

Your current cam looks like a good grind and if you like it just change out your springs like you mentioned. If you do decide on a new cam do call bullet and give them you engine specs and intended usage for the car, they will set you in the right direction.

I have never run this set up. I did however run the car after I installed the Indy heads with a M1 intake and Pro Systems 950 HP carb and I couldn't get the car to 60 ft. My 60's were 2.2's and ET was 11.1 at 132 MPH. The carb was set up all wrong. The 2.2 wasn't tire spin the car was hooking which I'll tell you about in a minute. Once I launched it pulled the fronts and then right after it laid down for a split second then cleaned up and unloaded the suspension. Then traction was an issue. I cleaned the strip with the slicks through the 1/8 mile. I have a video of a few runs and all the same. I never could get that carb tuned, just look at the AFR in the dyno sheet in this thread. There was more power in this motor just couldn't get it leaned out enough where I felt safe. Anyway sold the carb and intake and went to a BIG's 1050 Dominator and Intake intake. Here's why I've never been back to the strip with the Cuda.

I said the car was hooking and it was. I got home to take the slicks off and put the street wheels back on. I couldn't get the shank lug nuts to thread. They were always tight but no way they would thread. A buddy stopped over and gave it a try and no go. I laid under the car just to take a look and I had "Banana'd" the perches on the axle, bent all 10 wheel studs, I was using Cal-Tracs so no snubber. The differential smacked the bottom of the car and I made at least one 132 mph pass that way.

That was back in 2005 and I've never been back with the Cuda. I racing a 87 Grand National now.

Long time no see Brett,I havent been to the track in a few years. My last outing I ran a 10.72 @ 122mph. It was my first outing with e85 fuel. I still have the 8 3/4 and SS springs so I vowed to wait until I got the Dana installed,then finances stopped me. I also developed foot problems,numbness,shooting pains,then loss of feelings in toes probably diabetic nueropothy. I am trying to manage my blood sugar with cinnamon and diet.

While the full potential ET wasnt there yet, that MPH was very respectible Thats got to be a fun ride.

Super nice looking car by the way too!

Those Grand Nationals are awesume cars too

I'll be damn I was thinking about you the other day wondering if you were still racing or on the boards.

Sounds like the Scamp is running the number, congrats!

I took the Grand National to Cordova for the first time this year and I went and ran up in Earlville too. First time back to the track since 2005.

Take care of yourself and we'll have to get together at the track next season.
