first yr for #302 heads an 9.0 comp

feedback 2-v carb with leanburn computer with no vac can on the dist

the high grade of gas would help with it pinging under load

I like your dis-claimer note in your sig

HI: Just boughht an 87 Fifth Ave. a week or two ago.
I noticed the owners manual said to use premium fuel.
When I washed the car I did not notice if the fuel door sticker said anything more than unleaded only.

When I test drove the car, I noticed some pinging when spe
speeding up the freeway ramp.

When I paid the guy and picked it up a few days later he filled the fuel tank for me. I think he just used regular.
I added a container of Techron. It still pings sometimes under load.

It also did not pass State inspection, so I assume perhaps the timiomg is off.
I need to figure out what is wrong.

I will always use premium fuel or an additive.

I also have the original order invoice for the car, say's " GAS GUZZLER TAX PAID "

I bought a 1986 Fifth with 30,000 miles and just sold it a few years later with 58,000 original miles. Never ever used premium and it ran perfectly...that 318 never skipped a beat! Always used the cheapest gas sold!

my friend had an 88 and we ran regular fuel in it all the time...if it pings you need to retard the ignition timing a little...in his case we had to ADVANCE it because it was such a slug. We never had a problem with pinging.

they call for prem gas cause....they had 9.0 to 1 comp, with #302 heads, hart shaped closed chamberd fast burn swirlport heads

with a feed back carb, and a lean burn ECU that controled the timing with no vac can on the dist, with a knock sensor,02 senser and all that crap...the ecu can get off if the dist has been moved and out of phase...seen them turned trying to set the timming...wrong,they are locked down in a range the the ecu can control it up or down, once its out of range it trys to compenste by running rich or to lean

the vac can was on the ECU control unit and done by electronice feed back

I drop a points dist with a pertronix points coversion kit in it and run an eddy intake with an eddy carb with headers

use a vac gauge to set the timming and hook a hose from the carb to the dist for vac advance

I have advanced them up to 14* and back them down till I have no pinging on whatever grade gas you run

I like it where it will ping a little on WOT on cheap gas and no ping on prem gas....thats the jagged edge but works for most teens in any thing

run what ya brung!
