For the third time the overdrive in my early 04 48RE trans 4x4 went out. Had it up on a rack and it looks like I have fluid leaking out of the unit on the top, can't see where it is coming from. Each time my trans guy has me take the entire trans out, I am done doing that so I looked online and found out that the unit should be able to be removed without the trans coming out. Anyone do this and is there a better unit sold that can be bolted in? I also read that the mount is weak and there is a stronger mount made, anyone use one? I am getting close to buying an Alison conversion...

It is very easy to pull the OD unit, ship it to me and I will build it so it does not fail. Very easy to add clutches and cooling lube to the planataries... You want no part in a Duramax, we have one (an 06) of those in the shop right now for head gaskets studs and EGR delete, glow plugs and his in injectors are needing replaced and the bill is $6600 and we are the cheapest legit shop in town. This is the second time he has had head gaskets in 150,000 miles. Now we are in there we can see bad pitting in one cylinder and one of the rear head bolts was broke off and is very hard to drill out and the block and heads should be both be resurfaced as he drove it a year before fixing it so now to tear the engine down, sleeve it, mill it, is almost as much as a re-man engine... he is now looking at $12,000 for a reman with head studs, new injectors, EGR, delete, and glow plugs as well as a couple hundred for a couple leaking cooling lines and other odds and ends. I would take a tranny problem over that any day

If you do a little research you'll find there have been quite a few improvements done to the Duramax over the years. The LMM engine, 07.5 and the later versions have the latest updates that have made them much better than the previous versions. Besides the obviously stated lack of repair and maintenance on one does not discount them all. It would be like saying I blew up my 440 so all of them must be bad.
No diesel is cheap to fix, just look at what it costs for an in tank fuel pump mod and a new high pressure pump. Or how about a new ECM for a Cummins. The only diesels I would avoid at all costs is the Ford Power Jokes.
Honestly my Duramax has been bulletproof. I've replaced one glow plug, easy job and one door speaker. Haven't even put brakes on it in 130k.

I would look for a new trans man you should not be having these problems only towing 12k, hell I pulled a 16k 5th wheel all over including the mountains and never took it out of OD and never had a problem. I have old customers that pulled 20K plus all the time and had 200k on the stock unit.

I really think the whole overdrive unit is junk now as it is leaking out of the top somewhere! I tried to find a rebuilt unit, apparently not an easy thing to do. I had to put the truck in 4 wheel high today and it shuddered badly but then worked, and I have already replaced the transfer case. I wonder if indeed the overdrive case is cracked...

He is a race trans guy with 40 years experience and does not R&R transmissions, you have to bring them in. The Allison conversion is around $4500 from what I have read and you have to get the right trans as there are many models available. I am on the fence about keeping this truck, I bought it about a year old and really like it, but I am getting pretty tired of the downtime. A buddy has an 06 Duramax 4x4 dually that I just drove 5K miles and he wants to sell it...
Find a new transmission guy... Race car trans are built with light weight parts. not heavy duty truck parts.. Go to your local truck stop and ask around... most of the time they can point you to someone who can do a good job.. Or go to a local tractor pull, when they have the 7000 Street diesel pulling. they can also point you to someone who can build automatic that should take the abuse..
Chebby is bad word... a buddy has one 04 dura 104K he had to sleave a cylinder it is at 165K as of last week shop say it cost more to fix then remand motor.

I have not had the transmission rebuilt three times, it works well, it is the OVERDRIVE that keeps breaking! I drove it yesterday and the trans still works and pulls hard, but no overdrive. Never had one issue with the transmission, and he has built a dozen 48RE's and all of them have been fine, I am the lucky one who can't keep an overdrive working.

How many miles do you put on the overdrive unit before it fails? Are you towing that trailer in overdrive? What is failing in the overdrive unit? There is a switching valve in the valvebody that can restricted cooler flow and cause problems, sonnax makes update one to give you 40% more cooler flow which is a must while towing in my opinion. How does the pan look when you changed the filter?
The trans was built about a year ago, I had 165K trouble-free miles on the trans before I blew the engine. The trans was starting to slip a little so while I was getting another engine to put in I had the trans rebuilt. The overdrive first went out about two months after I started driving it again, it was the large snap ring that broke. They took the trans out and replaced the snap ring and put it back in. The next time it was a solenoid, they did the same thing. Then one cooler line started leaking, fixed that then the two front lines rubbed together and started leaking. After that the overdrive started going in when it felt like it, nothing I did would make it kick in or out. Then it got to the point that it would only kick in when it was good and warm, and then not all the time. If finally quit working altogether but I had to continue to use the truck as I had sold my other truck and it was all I had. When it started leaking again is when I took it to another trans mechanic and he found it leaking on the top of the case somewhere, that is all I know because I had to borrow a truck to do my latest haul and just got back. I have not changed the filter lately as I have less than 20K miles on it since it was rebuilt.
