I have had several Big Time engine builders tell me regardless of brand if it was street legal it was not good enough to run in a all out race engine.I use Lucas off road race oil most times, but from my understanding most off road race oil that can not be sold off the shelves will all work fine.If nothing else it will be worth every ones time to check into it.I had to hear it from more than one or two Big Time engine builders before I bought into it.
PS I also used to run the Valvoline VR1 oil because I could buy it at Advance Auto parts and get it at a good price. But was told not to run any street legal oil in my race engines.

Thanks for the heads up. We don't have an Advance here, but my O'Reilly's will match that price.

I don't recall ever seeing an oil that was illegal to use on the street.
Why is the oil not legal to use on the street ? Ron

Because high zinc levels harm cat converters.

Valvoline Not street legal, which is not certified, has little to no detergents, and has 1400ppm zinc, 1500ppm phosphorous, and is considered a 500 mile oil.
The VR-1, which is certified, had 1300ppm zinc, and 1200ppm phosphorous.

If your car didn't originally have a catalytic converter why would it be illegal?

It's not. I think it's "illegal for use in street driven vehicles". It's not the act of using it but rather a technicality in labeling the container.

Thanks for the heads-up John!!!!
I went up the road to my local Advance, & they only had 7 quarts of 50W VR1 on the shelf!!
So, I guess I'll be heading to my next closest Advance, since the counter guy told me it takes at least a week(??!!) to get some back in stock.
Wow!! When I worked the dealer delivery/parts counter where I was previously employed, we could transfer parts, & merchandise between our other stores the same day!!!
So much for customer service!!!
