What the heck, man??
Just recently the 2007 Ram has developed a moderate to severe shaking event when I hit the brakes from 60 mph and up. The tires are in great condition and were rebalanced today. I replaced the rear rotors and pads. The truck has 174,000 miles on it and at speeds under 60, there is no shaking while braking.
The front rotors and pads were replaced about 20,000 miles ago with OEM parts. I suspected the rear rotors since they were aftermarket, so I bought OEM stuff this time.
The tires have no unusual wear and are aired to 35 PSI. The front end does not pull while driving or braking. The truck shakes whether I am in gear or neutral.
Years ago I had a similar problem in a 2006 4x4. It was never fully resolved because the truck was totalled when i was broadsided at 33,000 miles.
I am going out again to look at the tie rod ends. Other than that, what the heck elso could it be?

2 or4wd? Could just be the cumulative wear of a number of components.

Okay, how would that be different at 20 mph versus 60 ? The front rotors were replaced a few months ago....
I'm going out to the shop to look at the front end.

The truck is 2 wheel drive.
I checked the front end. Tie rods are fine and the ball joints showed no slop. The LCA and UCA bushings still look like new besides road grime.
The shocks are original. The truck is lowered 2 inches up front and 4 in the rear. It has been this way since it was new.

The only thing I can think of you haven't mentioned checking would be a wheel bearing. Also worth checking for any damaged bushings or cracked spring mounts or springs themselves in the rear as well. As you have said, warped rotors usually can be felt at lower speed as well as higher and tire balance problems feel as bad coasting as braking.

With 170k miles it may also be cumulative wear on several parts.

99% of the time we found bad rotors.Does the steering wheel shake when it does it?If so the rotors are bad.New dosent make good. That and at 60 it takes more to stop the truck than at 20.After 30 years in the shop Ive seen it all.A bad bearing could be the problem but its doubtful.Rocky

Sometimes the steering wheel shakes, sometimes it doesn't. Its hard to pinpoint exactly where it comes from.
I sure seem to run into some "hard to diagnose" problems!

I still say its the rotors.I bet if you chuck them on a lathe they are warped.Been there and seen it too many times.Speed and heat increases the shake.Rocky

Yeah.... I was SURE that they were bad so I installed new ones and it still shakes. Maybe the fronts have warped? They were replaced a few months back. My drive home from work often has traffic slowdowns from 70+ down to 20 mph or less. 5000 lb truck plus me and 500 lbs of tools....This problem started after a few weeks of commuting. maybe I'll have the rotors checked out. Thanks!

Rear rotors wont make the steering wheel shake.Only the fronts will. When they get heated it becomes worse.Just because the fronts were changed dosent make them good now.At the shop we used mostly Advanced rotors.Had less problems than with the high buck rotors.Believe me Ive replaced thousands of them.Usually the rotors today are so thin that most cant be turned.Rocky

My Neon just started to do this a few months ago but I hear the tires slapping the ground so I think its a flat spot in the tires from someone skidding while putting on brakes or could be a warped rim....

Does it seem to do it more after the breaks get warm/hot? Does it do it fist thing, or after you've used them a bit? My 300 would be OK, till you used the breaks (getting them warm-hot), and had them warmed up. Then it would do about the same thing (getting progressively worse as the heat built up). This was due to "hot spots" in the rotors. I replaced the rotors, and problem gone. I know, you replaced them a while back. But that doesn't mean the rotors are still the best (don't know where you got them, how good a product they are). How long after you replaced the rotors did the problem expose it's ugly head? Did the breaks do this with the first set of rotors you had on the truck?

The problem only happens after the brakes are warmed up and yes, it does get worse the more I use the brakes. They are Mopar rotors from Autowest Dodge. I replaced them a few months ago and all was fine with them until a few weeks ago. There are several times in my drive home where I encounter slowdowns, going along at 70 then down to below 20 in short distances. I suppose it is quite possible that the fronts may have warped.

I got my new rotors from a different source than Dodge dealers. They work great and been on for a year now. No problems so far.

Ever replace the front calipers and brake hoses? A sticking caliper or collapsed brake hoses will make the pads have too much drag on the rotors. The further you drive the hotter they get. Bet that why it seems to do it after driving some. I would replace the front calipers and hoses.

I would hope FrankenBerri has checked that potential situation out previously. Spmething like this you could smell the brake pads and also there would be hot-spots on the rotors I would think.

Have you by any chance checked to see if the rear calipers may be seized???
If the rears aren't working, then the poor front brakes are doing all the stopping.....I bet you just few weeks of driving like that would cause the fronts to fail from the excess heat.
And.....Mopar rotors are good parts....sure you can get aftermarket good ones too, but a lot of the aftermarket ones now are offshore junk...stay FAR away from those!!!!

Not to get off topic, but funny you mention this. Last time I did my brakes I bought the cheap rotors and cheap semi metallic pads at advance. Brakes bite much harder than the more expensive crap I put on there last time.
