Hi, recently acquired 68 charger with the original 440/auto. Been in same family since new. Been sitting 30 years. I am trying to confirm vin # s on engine block and trans, but after cleaning pass side number pads on engine and trans., I am not finding any numbers stamped on either. Is this common? son of original owner says they have never been out of car. Block casting date jives and numbers on pad by dizzy are proper. "D" code and HP. Ideas?

The numbers are stamped up around the oil sending unit , right where the engine and trans mate together.

1968 model year "HP" engines were stamped on top near the parting line between engine & transmission.
