Now, everyone knows I'm a hemi guy, but this is interesting. Everyone knows that the old Poly 318 was a semi hemi, similar to a big block Chevy.
BREAKING NEWS-SMALL BLOCK HEADS BREAKTHROUGH may make all wedge heads obsolete! Left is a Poly "A" block with 360hp heads and Edelbrock Performer... Right is the 360hp block they came off of with Poly heads installed and Hot Heads manifold we're using as the pattern for our new Poly SS-X and SS-2X manifolds... Poly heads properly prepared will really "wake up" any small block no matter whose heads you already have! The Poly combustion chamber and Hemi-like valve layout are far superior to any wedge design! Aluminum poly heads for small blocks are in the works...Hot Heads, who does a lot of early Hemi stuff, is involved in this deal....

Interesting but then there's engine bay clearances, headers, etc.

That could be pretty cool. They have their work cut out for them: last I heard (and I may not be current on this), Poly heads couldn't be ported better than 260CFM intake flow.
I would imagine that a stroker Poly with over 300CFM available would amaze a lot of people, since scalloped covers have had such a Grandma image.

I always wondered why no one took the Poly and made a race version with there canted valve design. Saying there going to make the Wedge obsolete is a tall order, they've had 50 yrs of development, W8/9's flow alot of air.

I'm pretty excited to see this none the less, for arguement sake, what would a canted valve design be worth over a wedge give equal flow? How much is the unshrouded valve worth? The Aussie Cleveland heads seem to do pretty well in the EMC

Is that intake available for general consumption yet?

What about the block clearance to intake pushrod? I have checked this before, and some grinding is needed, close to a water channel. Will the new head have relocated valves to avoid this? Like the Hansen St5 conversion Hemi heads on a 440?

Steve, what year poly blocks are they working with?
That is going to open the door for a lot of new products.

Not really sure of all the details, but I do know that this project is going ahead full steam. I know that Hot Heads has their fingers in it, and there will be both single four barrel intakes and a 2 four crossram once things are up and running. As I hear, the heads will have a much larger port size than the original poly heads, and will bolt on any standard "LA" block.

I'm really surprised no one has done this before, that poly head with it's canted valve always had a lot of potential.

I'll keep everyone posted when I hear anything.

It'd sure be nice to put that 59 degree lifter bank (La's have that odd angle as a holdover/cost cutting from the original Poly design) to good use again....make 'em in aluminum and I'll try them

That would be funny if the standard block is already set up for them with the 59 degree block, might give the 48 degree guys a bit of angle envy

Just for fun, any bets whether they would have the stock single shaft set up of go to a pedestal/stud mount ala BBC or Cleveland Ford?

Looking at that picture you can see why mopar came out with the LA....the Poly would never fit in an early A body without a ton of work.

That dual plane on the motor on the right looks a lot like a 383 Performer RPM!

Go to www.vintagev8s.com to see good pictures of their DeSoto Hemi intakes that Hot Heads sells. I've been bugging them and Hot Heads for a couple of years now to get a Poly intake into production, the $500 Weiand 7503s are just too expensive for what you get, and I've got one in my back yard. A modern dual plane intake should be much better than the Weiand.

The primary reason that Mopar made the LA out of the A was to shave about 50lb off the weight. Making it narrower was probably secondary.

I believe the 59 degree valve angle was carried over to save $ and I also believe the A motor was a copy of the original Firepower with slightly shorter bore spacing, 4.46" instead of 4.5625", roughly 1/10 of an inch shorter. But there's a reason the timing set from 354/318Poly/318LA is the same.

I put a poly 318 in a 66 dart one time, it would not clear the inner fenders, I dropped it down several times with the cherry picker before it got enough clearance, I used my original 273 mounts and it took some doing to get them bolted up. When your 17 and don't got no wheels you just do what you got to do.

This will be a great choice for the guys who bought 59 degree R3 blocks.

I will just stick with the P7 for now. But, love to hear that people are actually trying new things that can improve HP for the Mopar crowd.
