Is it the straight cut gear in the blower or the belt and pulley's that makes the nice sound?

Thanks

IMO, to hear the sweet sound, you must run a screw blower. It's not the belt, it's the rotors that you are hearing and a screw blower sounds so sweet.

From what I've read, the blower whine comes from the air getting compressed where the belt teeth engage the pulley teeth.

Could be, I don't know for sure. I have always been strapped in a dragster with zoomie pipes and I don't think you could hear the belt, but you sure hear the whine of the screw blower.

Which type of Blower, Roots, centrifigul, or screw blower?

I think the front drive gears on the Roots blowers are what make the most noise, maybe not

I'm sure they contribute to "the sound" but my understanding is that as the belt cogs engage the pulley, they displace the air in the grooves at very high speed thus the "whistle".

I agree, nothing sounds as sweet as that. I just freshened a customers screw blown pro-mod with 11 MM pitch on the belt. There's a lot going on with the drive gears, the screw rotors and belt pitch. It's hard to tell where the sound actually comes from, but I think all three area's contribute.

Duster Dave, you are absolutely correct; It is the sound of air being compressed between the belt and pulleys.

In an effort to reduce noise, some resort to drilling holes in bottom of the pulley grooves to reduce pressure, thereby reducing the noise, but it's a small reduction at best and not worth the time.

In fact, if you remove the belt and simply spin the blower, the snout has it's own oil reservoir, running with angle-cut gears in most cases, and they don't make much noise at all.

Again, its the belt and pulleys that make the noise, and what a sweet noise it is !

Why then do some whine like a banshee and some run fairly quite?
I could see 1/2" pitch being noisier due to more surface area compared to say 8mm. I have a Littlefield 14-71 with 8mm drive assembly for the Hemi and I don't like that really loud screeching whine I have heard on some cars so Dan I hope you read this LOL. There is a guy in town with a black 55 chevy with 600+ cubes running a roots blower and not much wine to it and sounds badass to the bone and man this 55 goes......

My guess would be that the bigger the blower overdrive, the bigger the noise.

Depending on the blower, there is some level of gear noise. Even the small blowers with serp belt setups have some whine. The "71" series blowers make some level of gear whine even in thier intended application(gear driven diesels).
That beeing said, I've dealt with a few blower cars, all had 14mm belts. The noise the belt makes far exceedes the noise the gears make. I've also found(contradictory to what I thought) that the tighter you run the belt tension, the quieter the belt noise is. This may not be true with other belt styles, but it's been self proven to me on the two cars I've messed with.

Its directly related to how fast you spin the blower. The more you over drive it (spin it faster than the crank) the more noise it will make. Likewise, under driven blowers make significantly less noise, since they're not moving nearly as much air between belt and pulleys at lower rpms.

It has nothing to do with tension, which by the way, must not be excessive, since the belts don't give, and are capable of bending the snout of your crank and/or wiping out the no 1 main bearings. It's also why the blower belt (with a cold engine) will be loose enough to remove without tools.

The reason: The combination of all the aluminum parts grow once the engine warms up, so much so that an over-tightened belt will, as noted above, wipe out your #1 main bearing; possibly bend your crank snout; and I've even seen improperly belt tensioned (adjusted too tight) such that it shut down the engine - and bent the snout.
