The Hemi uses a 172 tooth flywheel while the 383/440 uses the 143 tooth flywheel; different diameters.
Also the Hemi uses a didect drive starter while the 383/440 use the gear reduction starter; different mounting pad.

OK I see....the 172 tooth wheel and the starter I take they are HEMI only items....right?
And are they only available as original items or can you get aftermarket 172 tooth flywheels_?
I hear those direct drive starters are a pain in the butt and they are know to fail easily....right?
first one YES
Yes to AFTERMARKET
the DD starter is VERY hard to FIND and very $$$$ when and IF you find one , RobbMc sells a Replacement , but if you need to have an ORIGINAL PRY open the WALLET for the bell and the starter

why did mopar have those HEMI scpecific items instead of using the regular B/RB for the HEMI as well?
Wasnt the B/RB stuff good enough???? Why not use the same stuff?
I believe in 70 and 71 they used the same bellhousings, flywheels (cept for the 8 bolts on the hemi) and starters for both HEMI and B/RB....right?
why did they do it ??? your guess is as good as mine , but that's the way it is so if you are after ORIGINALITY just realize it DOES NOT MATTER WHY , find the parts and buy them .
in 1970 someone decided it was CHEAPER to use the RB parts which gave the factory a HIGHER profit

OK I see.... thanks for the replies.... even though my car is an original 69 matching numbers HEMI charger I dont see myself spending 3k on a correct housing, flywheel and starter that still need to be restored! I have a 69 2892626 bellhousing and I think the flywheel I got with the car is a billet 8 bolt 143 tooth unit. So that should work and look "STOCK".

The only thing that will not look stock to the hemi purist will be the starter , but they will have to crawl under the car to see it .... use what you have .

OK, that will work....
and if they crawl under the car to see if the starter is the correct direct drive unit I will have the chance to give em a good kick on the butt!
or the head ???
