Stick an axle in the good side to keep it lined up, then partially stick in the other axle and turn it to line up. Although it may take as much as 100 ft pounds of torque to turn it (I think 110 is the factory rating for preload?) Good luck!

Doesn't the turning load go in inch pounds?
Pinion preload is in foot lbs and is a lot (110 or more), as mentioned.

So it looks like it will be a little easier if I reinstall the pumpkin in the rear axle housing..

The 110 foot pounds is the "pre-load" on the suregrip. That is, with one axle stationary, it should take 110 foot pounds to turn the other. I have never seen a used one take that force, but I believe that is what it is. Keep in mind I believe, that is different than knowing exactly.

inch pounds ?? One would be able to spin it by hand , if you can then the suregrip is spent .

Try loosening the bolts that hold the case together, then try again. That will unload some of the spring force (assuming its a cone type). About the only way this gets out of whack is its put together the first time after re-assembly and an axle is not installed to line them up. Can you try to pry the axle/spyder gear to get it to line up? But put an axle in the lined up side other wise it will move too. Just don't exert enough force to knock a tooth off.
