Well I had my 48RE rebuilt and it is great now, except the overdrive keeps going out, this is the third time now and I am sick of it. First issue was with a large "wave" washer that broke, second time was solenoid, who knows what the issue is this time. The problem is that the shop that rebuilt it usually only works on trans that have been brought in, they don't R&R them.
The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

That doesn't sound like a shop I'd want working on my transmission.
I worked in a diesel performance shop for a few years and have built quite a few of these transmissions. We have a few pulling trucks running around the country making near 1000hp/1900tq with a well prepped 48RE and mostly stock hard parts. These transmissions work very well when properly built. My stock '03 will chirp second and hits hard enough in 3rd and 4th that you can actually feel it (as opposed to the stock, sluggish, slip shift that these trucks came factory with). A good torque converter and valve body will help prolong the time before a rebuild, but still isn't as good as one with built internals. There are a lot of little things that can be done to help them last.

I was told these transmissions don't hold up if they have been rebuilt once before. Sounds odd, right?
Run, don't walk, from any shop that told you that.
Nothing wrong with a 48RE....most of the ones we used to get for rebuild were owner ABUSE...like hooking onto 12000 lbs of 5th wheel and not realizing that there was a "shifter" on the column!! That's right....peddle to the metal and overheat like crazy. A reputable transmission shop should be able to fix one to last indefinitely.Do some searching.... Anyone that gives you flack about that trans has major ISSUES!!!
