2005 2500 Trans issue - 10/15/13 01:45 AM

48RE. Completely stock truck.

I had this trans rebuilt about 50,000 miles ago. Things were fine until I developed a leak about a month ago at the selector shaft seal.

I took the truck in to have the leak fixed, which it was and went on my way. That was two weeks ago.

Driving into work last week, I had no pull in first gear. Took it back to the shop and got a call today.....clutches gone...rebuild needed.

I was told these transmissions don't hold up if they have been rebuilt once before. Sounds odd, right?

This is a very reputable shop that typically builds our hot rod transmssions that we have never had a problem with.

Whats the consensus on another rebuild.....no go or what? Is my guy off his meds this week?

maybe front band issues

would have to see things first hand to make a determination.... but most of the "poor power taking off" issues I find are related to the trans not shifting down into first when coming to a stop. This is related to a failed gov psi transducer/solenoid which is swapped out fairly quick. Done a ton of them over the years.

On your rebuilt question. I overhauled my trans in my 01 CTD just shy of 37K as I had gone through two stock converters. I've got over 90K on my rebuild and don't even think about it when I hook on to the boat or racecar and hit the road. I bought my converter and valve body kit from Dave Goerend in Iowa and used a factory overhaul kit. I'm no where near stock and this trans holds the power great!!

Also rebuild with aftermarket parts make these transmissions indestructible.if transmission shop tells you they don't hold up after rebuild find a different shop

Well I had my 48RE rebuilt and it is great now, except the overdrive keeps going out, this is the third time now and I am sick of it. First issue was with a large "wave" washer that broke, second time was solenoid, who knows what the issue is this time. The problem is that the shop that rebuilt it usually only works on trans that have been brought in, they don't R&R them.

That doesn't sound like a shop I'd want working on my transmission.

I worked in a diesel performance shop for a few years and have built quite a few of these transmissions. We have a few pulling trucks running around the country making near 1000hp/1900tq with a well prepped 48RE and mostly stock hard parts. These transmissions work very well when properly built. My stock '03 will chirp second and hits hard enough in 3rd and 4th that you can actually feel it (as opposed to the stock, sluggish, slip shift that these trucks came factory with). A good torque converter and valve body will help prolong the time before a rebuild, but still isn't as good as one with built internals. There are a lot of little things that can be done to help them last.

Run, don't walk, from any shop that told you that.

Nothing wrong with a 48RE....most of the ones we used to get for rebuild were owner ABUSE...like hooking onto 12000 lbs of 5th wheel and not realizing that there was a "shifter" on the column!! That's right....peddle to the metal and overheat like crazy. A reputable transmission shop should be able to fix one to last indefinitely.Do some searching.... Anyone that gives you flack about that trans has major ISSUES!!!

Thanks for putting my worries to rest. I knew it didn't sound right.

Sometimes things sound so unbelievable that they must be true.
