Ronnie and I have run the NSS portion of the PID reunion for a couple of years now, and have talked extensively with Beaver Bob about it. He is the absolute master of Nostalgia events.

Yeah, it has to be multi-make. I'm convinced that single make events are going to come to an end unless there is some "thinning out". There are just too many, and not enough cars to support them.

Speaking for NSS, there HAS to be some things that set it off and make it unique from just another footbrake bracket race. Using the 422 rules evens the field. Those guys are the best in the biz, and have come to their rules by several years of success.

This is going to tick some off, but use the .4 tree....it evens the field and gives the geezer who doesn't race every week a chance. The regular weekly bracket sharks have no advantage. Also, have the last digit in the dial end in a five or a zero...this encourages more flatout racing and makes a better show. At Pittsburgh, a 68 year old gentleman, Jake Jacobs, who races only a few times a year at Nostalgia events, won the Sunday portion in a Max Wedge...the first win since he'd won class at York in 1971. Jake was very emotional, and broke down in the winner's circle. The point I'm trying to make is that without the .4 tree, Jake wouldn't have had a shot. The regular semi pro bracket guys would have ate him alive. The field was totally level.

The payout was reasonable, as was the entry. We've found that by this stage of the game everyone has figured out that they are not going to get rich doing this, anyway. Most of the guys are geezers who just still enjoy racing their cars, so a reasonable entry and a shot to win some gas money and pay for a nice dinner on the way home usually does it. We had $35 entry, both days, and $600 to win, scaled down a couple of rounds.

Another thing, stick to the rules and keep everything period correct. Sadly, we probably ticked off some old friends this last weekend by not allowing Pro Stock hood scoops, electronics, etc., but if you start letting that stuff slide it will be ruined before it starts. We got a taste of what the track operators go through with several coming up prior to eliminations telling us why we should have bent the rules for them. Get the rules posted, well known, and keep a copy of them posted in someone's trailer. Everyone is a victim. We put some thought in ours, more liberal than some organizations, and they seemed to be pretty well accepted.

Does it work? On short notice, we had 27 cars make the first round NSS call last Saturday. Several more who had committed had some personal issues that did not permit them to attend. There is talk of a four race NSS series using the rules between PRP and the Beav....although that is still in its talking stage.

On a personal note, 1/8 mile doesn't appeal to me at all.

Bob....check your email.

I have never been to a all mopar race that had 300 cars and 3000 spectators.

The Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals that Herb was referring to is not a Mopar-only event. It is an NHRA/IHRA Stock and Super Stock event. There has only been one other "Class Nationals" event, which was promoted by Alex Denysenko at Byron Dragway in Illinois, in July of 2001. They had 187 Stockers, 105 Super Stockers, plus Nostalgia Super Stock and Outlaw Super Stock, with over 5,200 paid spectators.

Although the economy is not what it once was, we have a more favorable date and location -- 1st weekend in May at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, OH. We expect 300-350 competitors, and a baseline of 1,000 spectators per day, with a goal to reach 3,000 spectators per day through radio, billboards, and fan-specific flyers that will include discount tickets that will be available at Jegs retail stores, among others. Coupons will be for $5-off the $15 admission, making it just $10 to come see 300 S/SS cars -- and kids 12 & under are FREE. You'll see everything from 318-powered Dusters and old school Hemi cars to the new factory racecar DragPak Challengers, and everything inbetween (plus all the AMCs, Fords and GMs, for all the non-denominational folks).

The point stands: the more promotion the better, and the earlier the better! Good luck in the formation of the new series. Collect input from your customers and create the best product possible for them. As the sign said in Bill Bader's office, "I don't know what the secret to success is, but the secret to failure is trying to please everyone." Just remember that at some point you have to make a solid decision on the format/locations, etc. and stick with it.

Not for this inaugural event, but it's something we'll look at for 2015. We've got a pretty full plate already. Looking at doing an all-Stick S/SS shootout in 2015... why? Because *I* want to watch it!

Something else the track suggested which I like the sounds of is having reserved parking for fans in '75-older cars... you get free upgraded parking, and everyone gets to enjoy all the classic cars in one place!
