AWHILE BACK I POSTED ABOUT ERATIC OIL PRESSURE READINGS ON MY 440 WHICH HAD BEEN GOOD SINCE BUILT IN 1996 PRESSURE WOULD DROP ON RPM CHANGES AND THEN COME BACK UP.

AFTER GETTING READY TO PULL THE PAN ETC. TO FIND THE PROBLEM I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE OIL FILTER IT WAS A K&N THAT WAS ON FOR ABOUT 1\2 A YEAR BUT ONLY ABOUT 600 MILES. I PUT ON A STANDARD FRAM THAT I NORMALLY WOULD NOT USE BUT HAD ON THE SHELF AND THE PRESSURE PROBLEM WAS GONE. I WILL CUT THE FILTER OPEN AND POST WHAT I FOUND.

SO KEEP AWAY FROM K&N OIL FILTERS ED

I run an oval track car and had the same issues. one night I qualified on the pole and coming in the pit area I notice 10 lbs op. even when revved up it had only 20-5 lbs . I thought we were done . it was the filter. heavy wt. oil and hi pressure when cold and a zero bypass system was the cause. I actually had my best results with the k/n filters. the hi oil pressures when cold would implode the fiber. Oberg makes a fine mesh screen in a screw on type canister that will also solve the issue.[ replaces the spin on type filter] we ran 20-50 full synthetic which really helped the cold flow issues too. this condition is really tough on the pump also. most all - standard filters - today are designed for lighter weight oils and filters such as the Fram extra guard have extreme fine mesh in them which further compounds the issue with heavy oils.

What micron mesh do you run with that?

....20 or 22 they don't filter quite as good as paper but they solve the issue. the 10 psi per 1,000 rpms is still the best rule and that is for sustained use. the correct weight oil if matched to the bearing clearances will keep you there when hot. hi pressure does not mean more flow. hi pressure adds heat . better flow cools as it moves more efficiently across the surface maintaining a fresh supply of cooler oil. keep maximum oil pressure @65lbs cold and you should never collapse another filter.

This is the same type of anecdotal experience that has been used to scare people away from Fram for years.

Any mass-produced item is gonna have a certain percentage of bad parts, one failure doesn't mean it's a trend.

Problem with Fram is that it is not just "one failure". It's also low cost construction.

For a few dollars more, lol, I will run a better designed, better built and more reliable filter and it will not be orange.

But I also do not run 20w50 oil or no bypass filters.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Honestly never heard any failures with the Wix / Napa Gold. They're the only standard type filter I'd run after seeing all the major brands cut open years back. But everyone has their preference.

I never had any problems with Frams and 20W-50 but have changed to the Wix/NAPA Gold's.

List below is copied from FABO sticky. Hope they don't mind. I've used the 51515 on my smallblock for years. It says it's the same for BB which is sweet as I'm working on my 1st BB.

Part numbers for Mopars and price as of 12/23/2009
----------------------------------------------------
#51068: $3.68 - shorter/stubby version of the 51515

#51515: $3.45 - normal/standard Big or Small block 1qt oil filter, street version filters to about 20 microns, and has a bypass

#51515R: $6.33 - Race Filter, full flow race filter--no bypass, filters to about 60 micons, very high burst pressure

#51806: $6.03 - A heavy-duty 51515 with a built-in standpipe to keep the filter positively full of oil after shutdown in base-down mounting situations (slant-6, for example). These also greatly reduce oil spillage when removing a base-down filter at oil change time, see here and here for more info

#51773: $4.97 - An extra-long 51515 if you want your filter to hold two quarts of oil and have the space for it

#51076: $4.80 - Heavy-duty replacement filter element for factory optional taxi/fleet/police replaceable-cartridge oil filter

#51085: $3.78 - "Super Shorty" Mopar oil filter, 3.79" tall (the 51068 is 4.338" tall, the 51515 and 51806 are 5.18" tall, and the 51773 is just barely shy of 7" tall)

Are those numbers (from the FABO site) baldwin numbers (an excellent brand) or NAPA house brands

Those are Wix factory numbers I think. Napa (Gold) and Car Quest (blue) are also Wix and use a different prefix. I'll only use Wix at this point. The cheap filters have all had varying levels of issues over the past 25 years. So I only use Wix/Car Quest.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Ya, they just take off the first number. So the Napa Gold is 1515 I believe.

Some guys swear about WIX filters that are also sold as Napa Gold..
My experience has been negative..
Hearing everyone, saying how good these were so I bought (6) FL1068s' from Napa..
Every one of them were defective, the spin-on fitting had been tapped incorrectly @ the factory...

One could force the filter on but risk screwing up the factory threads.. I took them back for a refund. Note that this was a couple of years back, and most likely they have corrected their production by now..

Just my $0.02...
