Hey all, Milled my stock 318 heads 0.050" and I have a stock cast iron 4 barrel intake for it. How much should I mill off the intake faces?
Thanks

Hello Ori. The MP bible says take .0095" off of the intake faces for every .010" milled off of the head decks. That'd work if your port/bolt hole alignment was dead on with the old gaskets and you are going back together with the same type gaskets. I'd install/torque the milled heads then mockup the intake with Felpro printoseal intake gaskets just setting there in place & see how far up the V slope the ports/bolt holes are. I put a wipe of dykem across the top/bottom of the head/intake ports then scribe a horizontle line in the dykem to mark the top/bottom of the ports & on the intake you have to dykem/scribe in addition further up/around on the ends of the intake so you can see the height of the intake ports by seeing the height of the lines as they turn up on the intake corners if that makes sense. give them the distance the intake needs to be moved down in the V & let them do the math. They should know the face angle of SB head/intake surfaces. That way your port alignment is dead on & just takes a bit more effort.

Recommended to do the intake side of the heads. Not the intake surfaces. doing the heads makes a later up date possible without further milling. I have done .050 without milling. Just elongating the intake holes slightly. Under normal conditions the little bit the ports are off you will never notice. In fact a lot of this mismatch will be corrected as the intake is tightened and the crush of the gasket is taken up.

Amen.
Or raise the intake port a smidge with your trusty die grinder.
It's a 318, after all, a giveaway engine.
