Does the 440 6pk motor with a 6pk harmonic balancer need a weight on the torque convertor?

NO it has a steel crank and SHOULD NOT have weights on the converter. The only motors that got weights on the Convert were cast crank post 72 motors (440's) 440-6 motors were internally balanced.

IF I remember, 440 six pac used a steel crank, however they used a heavier rod and they were externally balance so use you should have a weights on the convertor IF it is factory.

They used a special harmonic balancer.

And how many unmolested Factory 440-6 have you taken apart??

You got to remember there was not a whole much of these motors out there.

Took apart 440 HP from a New Yorker (71) steel crank, big rods, eccentric on the harmonic and two weights on the converter!!!

Little off topic, and little different engine, but had to replace a converter on a friends 79 360 cordoba a few years ago because the weight flew off the existing converter. That thing shook so bad, you could not have missed it, or mistaken it for a dropped cyl, etc.

Yep , starting with 70 the 440HP and 6pk engines were external balance and had weighted dampners AND converters .

Yes you do, imagine all the guys back in the day who swapped in a 440-6 motor but bolted their old trans in the car. I bet that drove tons of guys nuts.

I have, 1970-71 6 pak and 1971 375 HP HP motors You can have them converted to internally balanced and then use a stock type nuetral balanced converter

If the converter balance is all you are worried about, get a B&M
flex plate for neutral converters with an externally balanced engine.

The flex plate has a cut-out on the opposite side to mimic the weights on the stock converter. It is nice and sturdy, unlike the stock flex plate.

I've heard of a lot of guys having problems with the B&M flexplates, converter bolt alignment and other problems I like and use the stock Mopar brand small (11 inch converter with the bigger 7/16 converter bolts) flex plates, both the SFI spec and stock street hemi non SFI specs, for all my race cars for the last 20+ yrs with no problems or failures I can't say the same for my friends who used the B&M plates on thier motors
