i saw that there is a metal gasket between the starter and the bell housing, and it's said that this is on all 70-71 big blocks. i don't ever remember seeing one of these, so it obviously isn't functional.

what is the story behind these?

I think the official name was dust seal? it's just a piece of sheet metal between the starter and transmission. Every car / truck I've owned had one

same here , most were lost the first time a starter was changed
