My Cousin has a problem with his dart since it was built 3 years ago we can not figure out! 1990 tbi 360 stock bottom end, edelbrock heads, comp cam with no fuel pump lobe, headers, air gap intake, edelbrock 750, MSD coil, stock 74 ignition box and distributor. Electric 3-5 psi fuel pump. Car backfires out the pipes when under full throttle, stumbles, and then roars back to life. Has 9 volts at the coil, have checked and set timing everywhere, adjusted valves a few times, can not get rid of it. Is the issue using a TBI block and cam and old ignition?

(1) More info: it acts up at WOT or as you get close to WOT (3/4 throttle) then straightens out with the pedal still floored? If so then the fuel psi is OK. (2) It ain't from the TBI block/cam/ign unless the rotor phasing is off but I'm thinking not from your descrip but more exact info please. Do you have another carb you can loan him? That'd quickly tell you if it is the carb.

Been through three carbs, three distributors, no change. It will sometimes pick up at WOT, then fall on its face, sometimes it will fall on its face and then pick up and run strong

You're way ahead of me. With the added info it sure sounds like fuel delivery

Think we should try a pressure regulator? Oh and it idles great too, little lumpy but never dies. What are the symptoms of a flat cam or bad valve spring?

The problem ain't from too much psi but actually too little (assuming it's a delivery issue but it DEFINITELY sounds like it from your added info). I'd T into the carb INLET & run a gauge out taped to the windshield & see what you have at the offending RPM/load (need 3 or 4 psi). Most round vacuum gauges have a psi side & a few fittings would take care of that. Not sure how accurate they are but that'd be a easily doable start. #1 see what you have at the RPM/load it's stumbling at. 2ndly if good there the eddy may need larger needle/seats & can you tap the other side for a dual inlet like you could on the old AFB's & what dia lines/fittings are you using? . I ran a carter 2bbl on a circle track 360 with 5/16" lines & No delivery issues at 6400 RPM at WOT at the end of the straights with a stock "airtex" parts house mechanical pump so unless you have a restriction in the fuel system somewhere I'd think you'd be good but it sure sounds exactly like inadequate fuel delivery

I'll give the gauge a shot, good idea. I thought popping from the exhaust meant a rich condition?

that might be. If so & if you're into the power step at wot or near wot depending on the vac at that point & what springs are in there when it's stumbling you could try rods with a thicker (power) tip to lean it out. In fact if you have a strip kit I'd go both ways & see what develops especially since changeing the rods is so easy

The last three times that mine popped back, it turned out being wiped cam lobes. Hope that is not so in your case.
