Looked at a car today that has a 1965 426 Wedge motor. ID pad shows:

A426 then a Maltese Cross

5 21 2

All these in normal font I'm used to seeing on my 66-74 cars. Then there is an HP in Max wedge size font between the A426 and the build date. Any thoughts from the 426 wedge experts? Thanks.

Pic's worth a thousand words but so far it sounds typical of a 65 426S Wedge.

What little I know that's what it appears to me as well. It has a single Carter 4 bbl on it with 6 bolt valve covers instead of the Max Wedge 4 bolt. The HP in larger font throws me though. The HP has been hit unevenly as well. Deeper at the bottom than the top. Like it was done after the fact.

I had a '65 Sport Fury with the 426 street wedge. My pad looked like yours sounds except I had an 'X' also (some kind of oversize or undersize, I forget which). My 'HP' stamp, IIRC, was also much larger that what was used later in the '60's. Again, IIRC the letters were easily 3/8" high.

Most Max wedges will be stamped MP (Maximum performance) not HP.
An HP stamp is a typical 365 horse .

So the HP is a factory stamp even with the larger font?

They didn't make a non HP 426 Street Wedge so the HP is likely original. If you want a more solid evaluation post a clear pic

All I can say is I bought the car in 1973 before all the "numbers games" started so I've always assumed it was original. I thought the stamp font was odd but never pursued it. Remember, at that time Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet and research was somewhat difficult. I sold the shortblock to someone in Denver in about 1985 so I don't have anything that I can show you now. That's the best I can do. It was a nice motor. Had a set of reworked rods and a set of Jahns forged pistons in it.

You would think it was factory. Makes sense.

The 413 in my '65 300L has the large HP stamped in the pad & it is the original engine.I would think the large HP would be correct for the 426 street wedge also.

Thanks for the info. My 35 plus years of restoring Mopars has been predominately on 68-74 B and E bodies so this research on the 62 Sport Fury has been different to say the least, along with the 65 Street wedge that's in it.
