Of all the various things I am dealing with on the Charger, I'm considering adding a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel return line. From what I understand, one good way is a system with a regulator that limits the pressure while sending excess fuel back to the tank. I have a new return line that has been capped off and unused since I installed it with the fuel line in 2003. The current system has a dual feed line that connects to the front and rear float bowls. There may be several ways to plumb this, but here are my ideas. Feel free to tell me if they suck. I read where people claim that a fuel system with a return line is better because the fuel stays cooler.
I'd need to make or buy a new dual feed line. The inlet splits off into two sections, one for each float bowl. The line that runs to the rear has a T that goes up to the carb while the lower section is to the regulator. From the regulator, the line runs to the return line.
Am I on the right track?

I run a high pressure race pump(cheap holley knock off) on my 88-440 truck.

I run a 1/2" line from cell to fram GP1 filter, nippled to the pump,1/2" line up to the 2 port regulator at firewall,3/8" line to carb inlet(single or duel) 3/8" return line back to cell.

I just used the 2 port reg that come with the pump(chrome holley knock off) it is not a return style regulator, but I have it set at 5psi on the port feeding my q-jet. on the other port I used a #2 phillips hex bit in the -AN 90* fitting. this reduces the 5psi down to 3psi

I have duel gauges right at the outlet ports of regulator and they stay rock steady.

the speed shop suggested a return line to help keep the PUMP cool and the extra benifit was keeping the fuel cooled down some.

at first the pump got hot and I mean HOT! with just 1 line feeding the carb and other blocked off. IMHO,cavitation even though it has built in by-pass

3yrs street duty on the el-cheapo pump.

id like to see some pics of how their plumbed..never ran a return and never had a prob, but i have noticed that if i leave my pump running without the motor running my pressure will skyrocket no matter what reg i use.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

by adding the #2 phillips bit in the return line 90* fitting it keeps the pump from free flowing by adding 3 psi of back pressure on return line and steady 5 psi on the carb feed.

i have braided line with -an fitting where you see it with alum fuel line along the frame rail, it is in the home A/C foam tubing to help keep heat down on the alum line.

I have thought of a cool can coming off the regulator just before the carb..but thats a future project.

works for my junk, been trouble free 3yrs so far..maybe 8,000 miles on it.

That lawn mower looks familiar...Is that a "Toro recycler 22 inch ?"

Your fuel plumbing is much more fancy than I would ever do!

here is the line going to the edelbrock 1905 750 cfm q-jet

trust me, it is the only 700$ fuel system I will every buy thats for sure. I hope it last till I die and I never need to replace it.

I turn the tunes on playing slim harpo I'm a kingBee! then hit the pump and say lets buzz awhile.

thanks.

..lawn mower is a craftsman 6.5 22" push mower, try mowing a 1.2 acre yard in mid Aug here in Fl with it.

I ride a 42" husky hydrostaic 17.5 HP wify pushes that one every once in a while.

The regulator and return will help keep the pressure in check and fuel cool. I believe what you are suggesting will work. Another way is to put the regulator on the right fender. Feed the pressure line and return line to the regulator then make or buy the feed to the carb from the regulator output. That's basically what I did with an EFI setup. It is readily adapted to repop stock type fuel lines which is what I used. It may be cleaner with a rear mounted electric pump. With an engine mounted mechanical pump I'm not so sure.

To get re-circulation and cooling, the regulator pressure setting will need to be at least a little lower than the pump output pressure when dead headed. That may need checked.

The other approach to get the benefits of re circulation is to put an orifice on the return line and no regulator. Basically a controlled leak. A .050" orifice is a good starting point. If fuel pressure is already under good control and fuel flow is more than adequate this may be simpler/cheaper.

I see these regulators with 2 ports. They are listed as "Non return type".

Why couldn't they be mounted at the rear of the carb after the feed lines to primary/secondary bowls, then to a return line? I'd use the 1/4" vent line as a return line still.

Thats they way the guys on Muscle Car and Horse Power did their systems. They said it was the best way to do it.

I am truckless..

So I guess I am just smart by accident.
I'm okay with that.

I just learned of THIS unit:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-12-841/overview/

It is a return type and priced right.
