Please tell me that a 741 case non-sure grip 8 3/4 rear end with 3.55 gears in a small a-body, with a stock 340 will be strong enough.

Enough to just have a little fun. My 7 1/4 only lasted one good hard day of driving.

No problem, it will hold up. Thats what it would have come with from the factory with a 340 I believe. Youre tires probably wont be worthy though with the one legger

Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat

a STOCK 340 will not break an 8.75 unless maybe it was a stick car, and you put slicks on it and gave it a 5500 RPM clutch drop at the track.

look at how many cars in the magazines are running strokers, hemi's, 5 spds, etc. with an 8.75 axle.

you'll be fine.

I'm glad you said unless it was a stick car because I broke one , not sure if it was a 741 or a 489 , but ring gear bolts came out ( factory built unit never opened up ) and broke one of the caps ...

I agree. 5000 rpm launches, a grabby clutch and 29x13.5 hoosiers were not a good combo for my 8 3/4. First time was the sure grip, second time was the housing---cap breakage only had to be the next thing.

For a stock 340, my 8 1/4 took lots of abuse and never broke. With stick cars though, i set a very minimal back lash--i think it helped. An automatic is so much easier on parts ---generally.

Outcast Dodge guy.

you'll be fine with an automatic. My 340 is slightly warmer than stock and I beat the crap out of it on the track with hard launches and slicks on the car, 8 3/4 rear, 300+ passes.

I broke an 8.75 with a stock Challenger 340 auto, 355's all stock 54,000 original miles, on 14 street tires, belted T/A's G60-14's........in fact put 2 rear ends in that car, blew the pinion on one, and broke,...Sheared off the driver's side axle splines......with just burnouts

also toasted the 8.75 in my 72 barracuda with a 318 auto!.......wheel hop during a brakestand broke the drivers side axle bearing, causing the axle tube to crack, plus the u joint exploded and I dropped the shaft big time!.....spit it right out!

I had a 741 in a circle burner(dirt) that twisted the splines enough to where we could barely get the yoke off. 360(2bbl 9-1 cr. class rules) no drag race type starts but constant accel/decell but I wouldn't have any regrets using one for the street.
