I was trying to think of a way to put A/C in my 56 w/out having somthing sticking below the dash (with only a couple of vents) like the ones from vintage air, etc, and I came up with an idea. I don't know if it has been done before, but could you mount an heater/A/C box from another car behind the rear seat and bring vents in from that direction? I know you wouldn't want to turn the vents 90 deg, but then would it matter? The suburbans have vents going down the length of the vehicles. You could even have rear defrost!!

Has anyone tried this, is it even possible, or is there something I am missing? I know the vans in the old days had the rear A/C and heat units and they just ran more hoses back there. Same with semi trucks.

That was the way Howard Huges did the first auto air conditioner, mounted the unit in the truck, ran hoses forward. Think with the "new" freon, you might loose a little of the cool by the time the air reaches the front. Gene

You should be able to fit one of the street rod units behind your dash. They are nice and compact.

Hidden vents aren't gonna be the best thing for comfort.

Many moons ago, we took an underdash unit and mounted it on the floor, under the rear seat of my grandfather's econoline van. We ran some really long hoses under the van and ran a remote fan switch to the dash. Worked great.

doesn't vintage air make a rear mount box?

Go to the wreckers and get a rear AC unit out of any Minivan, large SUV or any vehicle that has one. I designed the rear unit for the Ford Freestyle, at the time (2003) it was the smallest rear unit to push 200 cfm. Watch for where the condensate drain is, and how it is oriented as it must point downwards. Some of the newer ones are smaller now.

You can run vents anywhere, but will lose cfm for long runs and if any bends in the run.

Here's a pic of the rear A/C unit in my '57 NY, air enters through a speaker grille on the package tray and the conditioned air enters the car through louvered vents located where the ashtrays used to be in the rear armrests.

John, what is that out of? It looks like older style of AC case. But yes, that the idea for sure.

The unit in my trunk is a Vintage Air Super Cooler, VA makes a unit for trunk mount but the installer opted for the under dash type instead.

This is what I was talking about. I will probably go with Hot rod Air or something, but I am just kicking out ideas right now. I figured someone had done it.
