I was looking at a gasser pic that was posted and it had a primer/work in progress paint job.

primer spots featherd into orignal paint and looked wet sanded ready for base coat. had a clear coat on it and looked great IMHO.

was a nice flat dull looking base caot with nice gloss coat make it shine.

i am thinking of the same type of ratrod paint job for my truck.

my thinking is once the clear coat/coats are on,buffed out it should hold up as well as any other base with a clear coat.

my paint & body man confirmed this for me. he said i can use a gloss clear or a dull coat clear for effect/finish.

Clear is the final top coat. Doesn't matter if it's over metal, wood, primer, dirt etc. As long as the substrate is properly prepared so it will adhere, then it should be fine.

how about surface rust? is there a way to nuetralize it so you can clear over it.i would really like to keep the patina without it getting worse.

Any product that will neutralize it will change the look. Any rust converter will turn it black. You could try lightly sanding it some, enough to get the paint to adhere. Once you seal it, it should not continue to rust because you've taken away the oxygen. I don't have experience trying to save a patina'd look, so I will have to defer that to someone who has.

If you want this finish to last a good while, I'd not advise Clear over Primer.

The primary problem is that the Primer coat will have no UV stabilizer in it. While the Clear will have some, it will not be enough to protect the primer coat completely. If the car spends much time outside in the sun, the primer coat will break down and likely delaminate

I agree with this. About the only thing I would say would extent the life is using a clear basecoat. PPG has DBC 500. That is compatible with sanded surfacer and obviously top coatable with clear.

The sanded primer will provide mechanical adhesion. There are clears with much more UV protection also, such as the House of Kolor USC01 Show Klear. I think delamination would be pretty unlikely with a proper prep job.
