My 1985 318 has developed a leak around the pipe plug in the right-angle oil filter adapter. Is the purpose of this plug to simply seal the cross-drilling in the adapter, or is a filter bypass valve and spring located behind it? I don't have much room to work in there and I'm wondering if I will have to contend with a spring when I reinstall the plug.

Yes, it's just a plug. Nothing behind it.

I'd suggest hitting the tool with a hammer rather than a steady pull which works better for breaking them free & if it's an alum adapter you might heat the plug & melt some wax into the threads if it's REAL tight so as to not potentially crack the alum case
