Glad all is well! I had a issue at bremerton too back in the early 90s. The track used to be over to the left more and there was a dip out about a hundred feet or so. I hit that dip right at the 2-3 shift (4 speed) and it unloaded the chassis and sent me sideways. Luckily I got it straightened out and no damage was done..

After a few days it starts to sink in exactly how LUCKY you were. For the guys saying great driving job there was no driving. When the oil hits the tires all heck breaks loose right now. That was one of the few times that not having walls helped as that car would have been totaled and you would at least have some major aches and pains. When I wrecked my Daytona an oil line broke before the 1/8 mile and it still ran a 5.48@130mph. Bill Bader saw the whole thing from the tower and said it just touched the concrete wall on its third weave and the wall made it turtle over and slide on its roof for a 1/2 mile. Trust me my son seeing it happen went thru more than I did. A diaper wouldn't have helped in my case because it was the line going to a remote filter that broke but it will still have a diaper on it before it goes out again. My small block Duster will be getting one too this Winter as I have to reroute a header tube.
I have to agree, lady luck was riding with him that day. glad to see he survived but that was 100% luck. just missed that tree and barrier.

I would agree as well, theres not a lot of piloting to be done when you're sliding on oil. The car made the first move to the right, I brought it left to stay away from the other car. From then on the car continued left, while I held the wheel at full lock Right. I vividly remember staring at the barrier at the base of the timing board. It was pretty apparent I was going to miss it, which as stated was probably luck, because I was just hanging on at that point.
After I passed the boards I was staring at grass thinking it was going to catch an edge and roll. People sitting at the finish line claim at one point the car was on two wheels, I don't doubt it.
Got new front tires mounted up yesterday. Rears have been ordered, lets hope they arrive before i leave next week for ET finals. I have a spare set of rears I can run, but they are a radial and the car doesn't like them as much, even though they're faster.
Took the oil filter off, gasket doesn't appear damaged but it was definitely pushed out. At this point i think we have to assume the filter worked itself loose. Motor still had 4 qts of oil in it, drained that, put fresh oil in with a new filter and it fired up like nothing ever happened. Cut the old filter open and theres no metal in it. I'll likely change the new filter after a little more run time just to double check it didn't hurt itself.
Radiator got nicked during all the fun and excitement and is leaking out of one of the tubes. I'll see if i can have it fixed. If not we actually have another brand new one in the garage that was intended for my dads car, but hasn't made it there yet. So I can commandier that if need be.
Got an appointment at the alignment shop for thursday. Its my buddies shop so i have free reign to adjust things however i want. We'll probably also toss the car on the lift just to make sure everything is 100%. In this situation, double and triple checking is probably smart.
Assuming no major set backs, I plan to take the car to Pacific saturday. I'm sure that first run is going to be nerve racking.

don't assume that, oil pressure will do that.

I dont assume anything, oil pressure is normal.

Dustin if possible install a gopro aimed at your oil pressure gauge and record your pressure during a pass. IF you have a high volume oil pump like I did it may be spiking during a run. My oil pressure was fine everywhere except for during a pass and then spiking slightly over 130#. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I downloaded the pass on my laptop. I put a standard pump and all is well.
exactly you sure as hell don't want to tempt fate twice.

Glad to hear things or progressing along and seem relatively minor. Other than maybe your laundry bill I would assume it worked it's way loos as well. Been running Wix stuff for years with no issue but we get them quite tight with a filter wrench. AS for the pressure I run WAY MORE than most people would say is safe. Just watch an in car video of the car in the burnout box They suck to remove but better safe than sorry. Good luck with the rest of it and at the ET finals.

We've never rolled a seal out like that before but I'd guess we've come close. A sticking oil pressure relief valve was the culprit. Glad everything is OK

With the filter adapter and filter being quite close to the header do you think it was possible a little warm there after your staging drama? Going by the video the o-ring started giving up long before the lights. Plus how long was it between the previous round?
Unlikely that heat caused it IMO. The car is on E85, so water temp was 160 degrees and holding, trans was 150 degrees. Nothing had been super hot all day. We had 20-30 minutes between all the later rounds, and my car cools down pretty quick.
A normal passenger car sees temps of 200+ on the water and oil, thats pretty normal, so i dont see that as being the reason for the failure, unless the filter was already loose.

Well, we are back. Took the car out to test and tune last night. First pass I sat on the line and waited for the other car to get a good bit down track, made an 1/8th mile run and lifted. 6.6X to the 1/8th @102 The second run I was going to make a 1000' run but everything felt good so I legged it out. 10.46, silky smooth. Came back around to make another run off the trans brake. 10.43, straight as an arrow. Since a few of you were concerned about oil pressure I spent a good bit of time looking at the gauge while going down track. Rock solid 65#. Got a bracket race today where I am playing points spoiler and will be off to ET finals next week.

Glad your ok, but a staging duel is only screwing the pair behind you, when we owned a track one time two guys wouldn't stage, we had them turn their cars off then told them autostart was turned off, then when they staged we held the tree for one minute, no more problems after that.
This has already been hashed out. It was the final, we were the last two cars down the track that day. We "screwed" no one. Thanks.
