I have a 69 Charger 440. It is mostly stock. I rarely drive the car. Took it to the local cruise last night. The brake pedal was rock hard. The car falls on it's face if you punch it. This morning I put a vacuum gauge on it. It reads 0 at the inlet on the carb. Reads only 3 pounds at the brake booster. What are the common things I should check that would cause low vacuum?

which port on which carb are you getting a zero reading? Is that at idle? Low vac from a massive vacuum leak but more info as something is missing

Getting 0 vacuum at the port at the front/base of the carb. Carb is stock is most everything else on engine.

Take your reading at the vacuum port, on the back of the intake manifold.

I just took my AVS out to the garage so I dont have it in front of me on the kitchen table to check it but I would assume that that front mini port nipple is "ported" & would (& should) have zero vac at idle. 3 in hg at the booster ain't right tho & definitely will not activate the booster but I'm not seeing (yet) how it could be that low. Where are you mounting the gauge?

yup when they jump back a tooth they sure loose power and vacuum + the timing moves the same number of degrees back!

Found a hose that had a crack in the center... I get about 13 pounds of vacuum. Still not enough to make the brake booster work properly...

You might bump the initial up a bit to up the vacuum keeping in mind that that may require dist mods (springs, slots) to compensate.

13 inches of vacuum is more than enough something else must be wrong.

Perhaps your brake booster needs a rebuild. I have 10" vacuum and I have plenty of brake power. Do you have a vacuum canister hooked up to the manifold? My 69 needs to have a vacuum pump because of the cam, the power brakes, and the headlight system..

One thing at a time though

My guess is the brake booster is just shot. Any suggestions on how to test it? I was trying to think of what I could use to run vacuum directly to the booster. My hand held "Mityvac" has enough pressure, but does not draw enough volume.

Assuming I do need a new brake booster, does anyone have suggestions as to where to get a correct one? The car is fairly correct so I would want to get to get a booster that has the correct yellow zinc (if that is what the coating is).

To test the brake booster for leaks, securely plug the vacuum line feeding it and see if the problem persists. For the booster, I'm running a Cardone reman. It is (or was) available at an AP store. It is the correct type and cost effective but has black anti-rust coating and no new plating.

When I disconnect the booster and block it's line the vacuum gauge does not change. So it does not seem like the booster is leaking. However, the brakes are really hard to push with the vacuum line connected. I get about 10 - 13 pounds vacuum so I would think that would be enough to make it work.

Can anyone recommend where I can buy a booster that is original appearing and is not crazy expensive (aka YearOne - they want $499 for theirs).

Vacuum is commonly measured in inches of mercury. In round numbers, 30 in mercury = 15 psi. 10 psi vacuum would be 20 inches mercury which is very good for a healthy engine and stock cam. Agree more than enough for power brakes.

I suspect that he is mis-speaking and means 10-13 inches Hg.
