BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Step by careful step, Jason Wolford and his NSS/E (12.00 index) white 1965 Buick Skylark stopped the winning streak.

Wolford won the 2013 Dave Duell Classic Nostalgia Super Stock Nationals when his opponent, Doug Duell, unexpectedly went -0.016 red in the sixth and final round of the eighth annual event.

“I was being careful on the ‘tree,” said Wolford, who had advanced from the 35th qualifying spot and reacted 0.045 while receiving a 2.5-second handicap head start. “I figured it would be real close towards the finish line and we would be pacing together pretty well.”

This was Wolford’s first competition in eight years; he hadn’t raced since his father, Earl Wolford, passed away in 2005.

The car had been taken out of storage just a month ago. Within the past two weeks, Wolford and his brother, Dale, also an NMCA racer, went on a test outing to figure out what index they should chose.

The defeat ended a season-opening three-event NMCA winning streak for Duell, a two-time NMCA season champion (2009 and 2010) who admitted to be being somewhat pumped at the prospect of making it four consecutive event victories.

“I was really, really excited turning the car around the corner and into the water box, I had to keep telling myself to calm down” said Duell, who is also the host for the race named after his late father. “My reaction times had been coming down all day. The car hit hard so I knew it was going to be really good or really bad.”

In the semifinals, Wolford wiggled past Jimmy Ray in a double-breakout contest 11.971 to 10.453 which highlighted a 0.0095 1st and 0.0185 margin-of-victory.

“Thanks to Jason; he showed me driving the stripe to +0.009 isn’t good enough,” joked Ray.

Then Duell downed Coy Templeton, also running NSS/E, 0.017 to 0.028 and 9.529 to 12.027 in a closer 0.092 MOV.

Despite some obvious disappointment in his runner-up status in both class runoffs and eliminations, Duell was pleased with his performance in the larger context, building what appears to be an insurmountable lead in the season points standings with two events to come.

Dallas Schultz won his class, the Opel Engineering FX Shootout, and advanced to the quarterfinals in eliminator before going red in an index-up contest against Duell.

“If I’m figuring this right, I have a 13-round lead and Dallas is the only one with a chance to catch me,” said Duell, who estimates he has about 30 NSS event victories. “But he would have to sweep with me going out first round......” - a possible but not probable program.

For Wolford, it was a smooth performance. His reaction times ranged from 0.010 to 0.058 and averaged 0.036. He went 0.010 against Randy Stansbury in round three and then 0.024 to 0.033 against Ray in the semifinals.

“I took it one round at a time,” Wolford said. “This was the first race I ever was as calm as could be. I went through my routine and just drove. The car performed well, it was steady all weekend.”

And it certainly was a satisfying return to racing.

“It’s absolutely a thrill and accomplishment to defeat one of the best racers in the sport,” said Wolford. “I’m still pinching myself to be sure this is real. It’s amazing how tough these racers are. To win this event is a dream come true.”

Saturday’s Notes

A smooth and steady inflow of NSS racers led to a top-quality field. After 27 cars came in on Thursday, the eventual count topped at 53 with the arrival of Bruce Sammet and his ’66 Chevrolet on Saturday morning.
----------------------------------------
By the end of four qualifying sessions ending during the first round of class runoffs Saturday afternoon, a total of 16 drivers were within 0.010 of their chosen indexes, an all-time record in the eight-year history of the DDC.
-------------------------------------------
Overall, the field covered the smallest spread in event history. A half-tenth secured the No. 33 and 34 spots by Mike Kurz and Dallas Schultz, respectively. A plus 0.1 run got a No. 46 position, by NSS/D class champion Tom Hoffman.
How good was this group? Just two racers were minus index, Doug Wright at 9.485 on a 9.50 and Gene Will with a 12.468 on a 12.50 number.
-----------------------------------------
Holland’s qualifying accomplishment wasn’t without cost, however, as after the run he discovered transmission fluid leaking from a microscopic opening in the torque converter. He put the car up on jackstands and worked most of Friday evening to plug the pinhole.
After class runoffs were completed on Saturday, it appeared he took the car back to his shop for further work before making Sunday’s first eliminator session.
------------------------------------------
The class runoffs were conducted at a double-time pace due to a threat of rain. Just a few drops fell, however, not even an irritation or stoppage, and the racing was completed by 2:30 p.m. without errors or breakage.
----------------------------------------
Late Saturday afternoon, Duell was not only preparing for the evening awards banquet but also diagnosing a brake problem, a soft pedal due to a defective master cylinder.
Duell’s chassis builder, Matt Wright of BRC Racecraft, arrived with a new part but the repair was interrupted by dinner.
They came back and finished at about 10 p.m., testing their work at the far end of the race track, in the soft dark air of a mellow August summer night.
----------------------------------------
Defending champion Rosie Kossuth suffered the only other obvious breakage, smashing a rocker arm after entering the water box for the third qualifier Saturday morning.
More unfortunately for her, she ran into a 0.001 reaction from former champion Al Corda (2008) in the first round of Sunday eliminations.

Sunday’s Notes

All 53 qualifiers appeared for the first round of eliminations and soon it was clear that the adrenaline was flowing. Of the 26 first round contested races (one bye), 15 were decided by a red light foul start.
In addition, Holland reacted -0.003 on his true bye.
-------------------------------------------
Included in that category was a double-foul contest between Mike Sanders Jr. and Kent Morris.
Shortly after the end of the round, Sanders’ crew chief, Mike Sanders Sr., came to the race control center and said there might be something amiss with the Christmas Tree. He suggested two reasons: one, because his red light did not appear and two, the high number of fouls.
However, the answer was: on a double-foul the first and/or worst rule applies and the timing system is designed not to show the second red but shows green instead to signify the round winner.
Therefore, Sanders Jr. was the green light winner by the least offense, -0.026 to -0.102 over Morris.
-----------------------------------------------
The second round opened with Corda clamping a 0.004 reaction time on another former event champion, Kevin Gass (2011), and advancing despite a breakout, Corda at 10.979 to 10.479 for Gass.
----------------------------------------------
Then the red lights started flashing again - three consecutive - including Mike Moss surviving another double-foul deal, -0.065 to -0.066, over 2012 NHRA Hot Rod Reunion champion Clay Kossuth.
Unfortunately for Sanders Jr., he fouled again and this time his red bulb stayed on, -0.060 to +0.090 for Barry Camp.
The round finished with a total of eight fouls.
----------------------------------------------
Corda couldn’t repeat another 00 reaction as he and Duell collided in the final pair of the third round with Duell surviving 0.052 and 9.492 to 0.069 and 10.960 on the double breakout.
----------------------------------------------
The final count - the red light came on 28 times on Sunday. They all mattered, it was just the last one was really noticeable.

Great write up/coverage Bob

And yes it was a tight field as I have never seen so many cars running so close to their index. It sure made for some great races as you can tell by all of the red lights that the race was going to be won or lost on the tree when all were running so close to their index.
