A good fried of mine has a '70 Charger with a 2.45 8.75 gear set from the factory. The car does wharp speed without even reving.

OK, I get it. Low gears are high numbers, with high gears being low numbers, but high gears will make it faster while low gears will make 'em quicker as long as the low gear is not too high.

For those who want to play with gear ratios here's a toy to use. http://vexer.com/68rt/speed.html

its simple...do you take off in low gear or take off in high? in a normal 4 speed 4th is 1-1 but first is way lower and has a higher # ratio

The 74 Petty catalog has gears as high as 6.17 and a tons of intermediate gears. Stuff like a 3.07, 3.64, 4.75... Crazy stuff. All Detriot Lockers for them (rachet).

I've seen a picture of a room stuffed full of 8 3/4's at Petty Enterprises. Maybe there's still some floating around down south.

I have a 742 casting/3.42/Detroit Locker third-member. It is a factory built unit with a 1964 date code. It supposedly came from Petty Enterprises.

The catalog I quoted from was from 1974. I don't think they have or wish to sell any of that stuff. That was 30 years ago.

that's what I was afraid of. I might just have to offer toplescuda a nice chunk of change to come off of his.

I thought 5.57's were the lowest! What make are these? any pics possible. More details please. I needed a lower set for my circle burner & 5.57 was all I could locate. I ended up using a 9" furd with 6.20's

With this & my subsequent post I think I kind of destroyed my bargaining position right there. I have 5.57's but they just didn't get my rpm up on my circle track SB challenger where I wanted it.

ok i went and dug the 500 pound chunk out of the shed here is all i found
its a 742 case with a big on the side of it
has 43 gears on ring and 7 on the penion(sp?)
also has like some kind of bright shinny line across the ring with 184 and looks to be a j etched into it then 5010 h then looks like a apple shape then 7 r 8620 what the heck does all that mean?
i took these gears out cause the penion nut backed off and thay strated to make a houling sound one night so next day i swaped them out

43 teeth & 7 teeth is certainly 6.14's. The #'s dont ring a bell. A damaged/howling set is no sweat on a circle burner because the open exhausts from 20 cars is deafening.
