Took my car for it first run since restoration and it won't come out of 1st gear. I know the linkage is not suppose to have a gap between the throttle pin and the back of the tranny linkage as its shown in the pic below. Before hurting the tranny I'd like some advice to get it at a starting point if I could.
Should the throttle be floored and have the kick down linkage be all the way to the back on the tranny as well? Should I then start adjusting the rod length too? I think long is longer shift points and shorter is faster shift points.

The first thing you need to do is correct that linkage maladjustment , is that the right linkage or are you trying to use a 4bbl setup ?

It is 6 pack linkage to the best of my knowledge. The shop ordered it and put in on. I am assuming they ordered 6 pack linkage.

One other thing, do you have a service manual? Those holes in the bell crank are for rigging everything. You put a round #2 philips screw driver through all of the holes and only then do you adjust the rods as the book says to, but the bell crank has to be in the rig position first.

No, no manual. What is the rig position? Not following. Do you mean in the operating position? Or in other words the way in which it will function?

Is all of that stuff stock or reproduction? It looks stock There has to be a starting point for adjusting everything, thats the rig position,if its not right then nothing else will be right no matter how much you fiddle with it.If its right, then everything else falls into place. So you start with the bell crank, see the holes in the mount bracket and bell crank? You un hook everything, put a screw driver or a rod the same size as the holes through all the holes, and that locks the bell crank into place to start the adjustment. The book well spell out every thing out as to how much everything need adjusted. You really need a book, cause you can burn up the trans if this stuff isn't right.Ask me how I know. Now if the trans has a shift kit or other things, then you need to talk to a trans expert.I wouldn't drive it till you get it right, cause you can burn up the trans. And buy a real Mopar book not a off brand book. You need one SOOOO bad when working on these cars, cause thats the way they engineered it to be done. Also, like he said, MAKE SURE you have a sixpack set up first. Even the throttle cable is different between sixpack and 4 barrel. Is that a E body or 71 B body?

E body. 1970 Cuda 440-6. Sorry. I believe its reproduction. Guy that did the car ordered it up.

Kinda wanted to get it fixed (even if temporarily) so I can move the car back home. About 2 miles away. I will look into this tonight or tomorrow if at all possible. Thanks.

Your picture shows no fenders , how will you drive it home legally ? Have it towed and buy a shop manual , cheaper than having to fix the trans after mickey mousing it .

Here is a quick test , disconnect the linkage at the trans and wire it full forward , it should shift thru all the gears real quick , that will tell you that it's external to the trans .

That was a pic right before it was done, nothin under the hood has changed Lol. The car is complete (With fenders Lol)

That should help diagnose the problem. I will disconnect/wire and put the rear on jack stands and see if it will shift thru the gears. Thanks.
The rims are incorrect before someone mentions it. Waiting for the steelies to get blasted and painted.

Where can I buy a manual and what is the name of it exactly?

You can find the books a lot of different places, ebay year one classic ind. 1970 service manual, there should be two, one for the body and one for the chassis. Is that a real six pack car? You have the makings of a beautiful car when you get done, I know it takes time.

I wouldn't put it on jackstands , it will shift to 3rd in the safe of a few hundred feet at the most.

Here is what you want. factory service manual

Yes all original. I'm 49 now and bought it when I was 17. Just had a concourse resto done. My brother in law did it. Here is where it was at one point.

My buddy has a Motors manual. Will that due it? From back in the day. The old blue ones.

You can download a '70 service manual for free from mymopar.com

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

If this is a new trans the problem might not be in the linkage, to check it for sure disconnect the linkage at the transmission lever and allow the lever to come full forward...if it still won't shift with the linkage disconnected the problem is in the trans.

If you are wanting a concourse car take it to a mopar expert, which I'm not and ask them to go over it and give you a list of things that would hurt it at a Mopar car show. And fix them when you get time. I see quite a few just in the one picture. Not being critical, just you have the makings of a very fine car. I'm gonna do that with my car if I ever get done with it.Just keep plugging along.

There are a few things not exact but not many and not anything I couldn't do. I put an electronic ignition in so it would start and drive good. I know of a few other things but as I said not many. Right now the well went dry. So likely it will be another year or two before I actually drive or show it. I did this car mostly for an investment. I have a good friend that judges cars and he has seen it when I got it back from restoration and said the same as you. Thanks for the compliments, been a very very long road and almost-almost a divorce over this car. Never again, more to life than a car!! Lol. I know, it's a sickness!!

Tell me about it.I have a 71 B body. We are in almost the same boat. I'm 59, I bought my car in 74 when I was 19. I haven't driven it since 78 when I last wrecked it.Both the resto shop and the engine guy drained me of money, so I brought the car home to try and finish my self. Now I'm bankrupt cause of it. I just hope I get to drive it before I die.
See, your not alone. The problem is they not worth anything not finished, so we have to try to finish them. And we just keep plugging alone.

I moved the lever all the way forward after disconnecting the linkage and the car still won't shift. Guess Its time to take the tranny out. Can I just take the valve body out and see if its gummed up? What are my options? Just tranny removal?

Before pulling the trans, check the governor pressure; if it's really high or really low the governor can be serviced without pulling the trans....if the governor pressure is normal then pull the valve body.
