Hi

Cruising my 70RR 440 on a hot summer night and it just died, start it up again went a 1/2 mile and was dead. With the key on I put a multi-meter on the coil negative post with unilite distributor not connected and got 11.5v, then reconnected the green wire to negative and got basically nothing (35-.5v). I am assuming the photocell bit the dust but never had the experience before.

I had ohm the ballast resistor, was fine at 1.5 - also swapped out with another good one.

I replaced the coil with 2 other working ones and still no spark. As mentioned I was getting the voltage at the coil without the unilite on the negative post.

I believe it is the unilite, is there something inside to replace on them besides going with a complete ignition - module changeover. Should I be checking another failure point?

Thanks

Make sure the shutter wheel wasn't blocking the gap in the module.

I carry a spare module for my Scampage unilite dist because I thought it took a dump but it turned out it wasn't the module but you can use the lower cost E Spark module, half the cost. I would also put in the circuit guard to prevent it from spikes.

Well if you have battery voltage and the starter is turning fine, and you have no fire, then if that dizzy is an actual 'lite ' unit, most likely the light has gone out! and needs replaced, they are available, but cost close to 50$Bucks?
or just thro in a reg dizzy set it see if it runs

Unilte units are noted for the lack of living, they all die, some sooner than later Switch over to something better now

I can't in my situation, no one makes a stand alone 2.2 distributor other than the Mallory Unilite. Mine has been trouble free.

Ive had 2 Unilite dists. 1 in my 72 Mach 1. Never had a problem.. Had 1 in my 71 RR. I lost 2 modules in that 1.
Id bet your module went bad.

I am truckless..

As stated,, they all die at some point!, The 'lite' unite work great til you have a voltage/amp spike,, or someone decide to give you a jump and for some reason the positive was the neg, deal ,
If you have one, and now you have read these post , keep one handy !! just saying!!

Mallory makes a plug in box to keep the voltage spikes from killing the eye of the distributor. I have one on my unilite. It might be worth installing when you put your new eye back in.
