No, with a 3-speed manual trans, the reverse and 1st rod is shared, as is the 2/3 rod.
It's definitely do-able. There's someone over at slantsix.org adding the same trans to an early A-body- check out the Trans & Rearend section.

The shift fork is also different. OD4 only. The pivot point for the fork is farther away from the crank/transmission centerline due to the large diameter 5-1/8" transmission pilot.
