Trouble shooting my backup lights on my 70 Challenger and came across 2 charred wires on my bulkhead disconnect. Red and Black battery wires on terminals 14 and 18 on the schematic. Not sure when or what happened. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this and assure myself I found the problem. Was gonna go to a car show today, but don't want to drive it until I'm sure it's OK. Looks like these are main battery wires to the block.

without looking up the diagram my advise is to resplice the connector/wire (you're gonna have to anyway!) and see what happens. if the lights work, head to the show. if not, stay home and bust out volt meter!

looking things over, these wires don't appear to be fused before they come into the bulkhead connector. Thoughts on what could have caused this and where I should look first to troubleshoot?? This was a new wiring harness from YO about 4 years ago

Are these the 2 main in/out wires in the firewall bulkhead? The "in" past the fusible link & the "out" to the alt? Burnt connections come from friction that is producing heat from the electrons going thru a POOR connection OR TOO much current passing thru a connection not designed for that much current. bypass the (4) brass terminals in those 2 connections with wire & keep the ammeter needle as close to 12 o'clock as possible by relaying heavy electrical add ons such as a stereo to the alt side & not charging a dead or near dead batt with the alt. 725145/725147 are NAPA #'s for new packard 56 type brass 1/4" male/female terminals if you want to keep the bulkhead original.

Thanx RR I think I had a high resistance/bad connection at the terminal block. It actually melted the sockets as I don't have any extra loads on the wiring. (??). I took the red and black out of the connectors and ran them separately through the firewall with individual slip on connectors and everything seems to be fine now. Would have liked to keep the bulkhead connector original, but those sockets were unusable. Think I'm missing anything here? Electrical definitely isn't my strong suit

Some dielectric grease on the metal electrical terminals that plug into each other like the male/female ones in the bulkhead & you're good & crimp the female ones slightly as needed for a tight fit. EDIT What slip on connectors & is this the main in/out firewall bulkhead connections
