If one was to want to use a variable duration lifter, which brand would be recommended? I have used Rhoads in the past and loved them. The Crane units were not around back then but may be a better alternative today. Any experience with the Crane lifters?

No actual exp with either one but reportedly the newer ones are quieter than the old school Rhoades. Not sure if that's from better technology or they bleed off less duration than the Rhoades did. but here's a BTT for ya

no experience with the crane units but i've had Rhoads in my road runner for easily 20 years now. i think they're great. no ticking and they smoothed out my idle very nicely. no huge lopeness and i'm running a decent cam in a 440 with a 6pac.

I'm running the Cranes in a 383 with a 284-484 PS and 3:23's with 4 speed. Wrong choice of cam but they made the car much more drivable. I like them.
