Not all 518's are lockup, if the 518 is non-lockup the 727 converter will work.
904 converter won't fit any 518.

I had to go to the 518 non lock up input and I changed pumps at that time also so I could use a standard 727 high stall conv in my 518

No, different spline counts. The 518 is a lock up and the 727/904 is not.
Many 727's and 904's become lock-up starting in the late '70's.

so,how do I identify a lock-up and non lock- trans? and converters?
The lock up conv is big... as far as I know they only built the one diameter and its like 11.5... on the trans that pretty easy... if you have a 518 and its a 1 pin connector that is OD only... a 3 pin is OD and lock up... you dont want the 7 pin one.. thats a computer controlled one and is all electrical controlled

Look at the end of the input shaft, if there's a hole going deep into it it's a lockup.
