My tranny is running about 220* on the highway with no load. Think I have it a little tight. Is 220* to hot? This is my 92 D350 CTD w/ Getrac 360 5-spd

I would think so. I think 150 would be better. Maybe it depends on what lube you're running. heat kills auto transmissions, because the fluid starts to break down when it gets hot. so if you're using light ATF then heat would be bad, but if you are using a thick gear oil, I'm not sure what temps those can handle.
FWIW, I've read that some of the guys who push their T-56s hard have installed an oil cooler. remove the drain and fill plugs and install fittings to connect hoses. bottom one pulls the oil out, pump it through an oil cooler, then pump it back into the fill hole.

by the way, your trailer is HEAVY!!! I had the jack bottomed out and the suspension on my Dakota was still sagging down, I couldn't get the jack to go low enough to get the weight of the trailer off the block of wood but, since my dad had a half ton rated truck here that day because we used his tractor to move some of the stone around, we got the trailer moved and now it sits on a nice fresh pad of gravel!

My '08 Silverado with factory temp gauge runs 205 - 220 in traffic daily with no issues.
Old, tired, and sometimes broke down. Me, not my car...

Any OD transmission like the Getrag is gonna run hot because the OD gears are in operation in top gear. A non-OD trans is direct drive in top gear and the gears just go along for the ride.

And that's after I sold a ton of crap at Carlisle. That's why I own a 1-T CTD. Thanks Tom

I'm running 5W40 synthetic in it. At what temp should I be concerned? Auto trannys run at about 225* and I think ATF burns at about 240* Thanks
300 deg continuous was considered redline for big truck trans and diffs when I started over the road 35+ yrs ago. That was before synthetics so SAE 90 was the norm.
My transmission temps routinely run 200-215f running SAE 50 Synthetic with a cooler and if the weather is 90+f and I'm heavy or it's windy out 250-275f. Trans is a double overdrive 13spd Eaton.
I would confirm whether a multi-grade oil is correct for your application. My understanding is those Getrag trannies are pretty delicate at the best of times as far as 5th gear is concerned so I would make sure it has the right oil in it.
As has been posted, an OD trans when run in OD generates a lot of heat but if you drop it back to 4th the temp should drop significantly.
Unless your temps used to be 20-30 deg cooler and now it's suddenly running hotter you are likely OK. A change in temps like that might indicate bearings on their way out.
A good diagnostic tool would be to go to your local big truck dealer like Kenworth etc and get an oil sample kit. The results will tell you if there are any abnormal wear metal levels and if the oil has been scorched. Costs about $30 give or take.

Great info thanks. I've been running the GR 360 across the country for the last 10 years. Seem to get 60-80K out of them no matter who built them. The one in there now is one I built. It has 60K on it and it burned the front counter shaft bearing on the way to Carlisle. So we drove just under 3000 miles in 4th at 25-2800rpm. I pulled it apart and it looked good except the one bearing. Fluid was real clean and no metallic that I could see. I changed the CS bearings, cleaned it up and put it back together. I then made a 500 mile trip to Denver. Just seemed to run a bit hotter than usual w/o a load. When I got back into town I bought one of those lazer beem thermometer. The books and everyone says to run 5W30 which I have been. 7qts which is 1.5qts overfill. I went to 5W40 this time cause it always gets hot pulling the load over the Rockies. I leave next week for the Nats. No load going out but will have my trailer coming back.

Got home and the tranny did great. Never hit 240*, shifted fine and ran quite. Mostly ran 180-200* with the trailer. Me happy. Thanks again Tom for the parking spot.

IIRC, that takes its own type of fluid for the carbon fiber syncrhos and wrong oil and heat are the killer.
the dealer had oil coolers that replaced the PTO/inspection covers on both sides of the main case to add more oil and to disapate heat with the fins on the coolers.
from what I have read, researching on my 92 d-250 2x truck nv4500 5-speed mopar NV4500 oil or castrol syntorque full synth. oil did best at staying at lower temps and do not eat the synchros up.
I may be confussing the getrag and my nv4500 trans??? 5 -speeds are new to me still.
i do know the correct oil for mine is 80$ a gallon to fill it up with mopar nv4500 gear oil.
someone in the parts for sale section here on moparts had the oil coolers for sale last month if you want a pic of one.
I will be looking for a set for mine when I get it swaped in my stepside truck.
