If you had a 340 hp manifold on a car and the heat riser knob won't turn, is there a way to determine if it is stuck in the open position or in the closed position?
Thanks for any info.

With the engine cold turn the heat riser one way and the other and have someone stand behind the car, there is a noticeable lack of exhaust flow from the passenger side tail pipe when it's in the closed position. It's not a knob, the round thing is a weight.

Mine is stuck. I can't turn it either way so I am trying to determine if it is stuck open or closed. I'm thinking closed because the car has started to not want to idle once it gets hot. I guess from what you said if I check the tail pipes there should be more flow from the driver side if it is in the closed position

Unless you have fuel injection the reason it is not wanting to idle when it is not hot is because the gas is boiling out of the carb. You are not alone ....
Are all the parts of your heat riser still intact , stop pins and springs ? You MIGHT be able to tell which way it is stuck by posting a picture to compare it . Otherwise you will have to remove it , which you will anyway to fix/remove it .

Yes it should be complete. It was functioning when installed just 500 miles ago. I will probably try and get the manifold off tomorrow morning.

ok, dropped the tailpipe from the manifold and found the flap is missing and there is even flow of exhaust coming from both sides so this is not causing any extra heat up to the manifold. I tried removing the mixture screws and spraying some starter fluid in there to clean out the idle port along with installing a new fuel filter. I did this to make sure there wasn't anything clogging them up. Car still runs fine for about 25 minutes and then begins to not want to idle again. any ideas on what to try next...
