So i'm kind of in the dark about how all of this works and google doesn't seem to be helping me any. How can you obtain information on a chassis certification tag? I assume that's what i'm looking at on my car, it is on the door tube just about where your left shoulder would be. My specific car has an aluminum tag riveted to the cage. How in the world can I figure out if this is something IHRA, NHRA, or a local track tech piece? Do I need to approach my local track tech and they would be able to locate the information? To the best of my knowledge the car was run through the 90's I don't know how much later, and I do not know any history.

The Weld Pro-stars were mfg '89, and the tires are severely dry rotted so it's been sitting a good while, my point is its nothing new to the car. Thanks in advance, TC.

NHRA chassis cert will be a decal on the passenger's side of the main hoop...should be able to see it through the passenger's door window. I believe IHRA is done the same way.

Sounds like you have a tag on the cage from whoever built the car.

NHRA or IHRA would never rivet a tag on. Like said in the post above they are just a sticker. If you need your chassis certified (NHRA) and you are in the Pittsburgh, Pa. area Tom Blair is an inspector and he will come to your house or shop to do a cert. He charges a per mile fee that to me is really worth paying instead of towing somewhere. If you need a phone number PM me. Like I said he does NHRA only.

Thanks for the info guys its nothing near that fancy. Literally just a piece of aluminum with a number on it. I was hoping to find some history on the car with that number but that doesn't seem likely now. Thanks again for the quick reply. Must be a chassis builders number or something to that effect.

Also I'm about 30 miles from Beaver Springs so it'd be IHRA if it's even close to being legal there without needing major mods, TC...

If you ever want it done Pittsburgh Raceway Park brings in a IHRA inspector every Spring before the season starts. They always post the date and times on their website so people can call to set up appointments.

It is a chassis builders serial number! It is required by SFI. Any chassis shop is required to place a serial number on the car and retain all documentation on the chassis!

Is there a be all end all list of these numbers? Does one single number stay with the shop or do they apply a number to each build (chassis) in chronological order from whatever car is being built and gets it certified?

To sum that up, does the number belong to a specific shop or that single car?

The serial number belongs to the shop. The shop is supposed to retain documentation of the build.Basically a build sheet for the build.

Thank you very much for the info. At least I know what the tag is from, the bad news is I'm sure finding the shop would be next to impossible, TC...

If you had a little of the history of the car you can
back track it and ask builders in that area if they
know that serial number or know whos number it is..
even pics of the chassis helps.. some chassis builders
do things a certain way
