I've got a K & N air intake for my 06 Mustang GT. The intake by itself did almost nothing - except create a lean condition at high RPM. Reprogramming timing and fuel curves in the computer along with the K & N intake really woke the car up though.
I'd say the intake is a waste without reflashing the computer with a proper tune. Don't do it without the tune.

My wife has a 2002 Durango with the 4.7. Really happy with it and it tow's really well. Used K & N air intake kits have been popping up here and there and I was wondering if they are worth buying for the performance and gas mileage? My other question is since I am in the midwest can I run it in the winter without any problem? Thanks in advance.....
We had a Durango with the 4.7 and full time 4 WD. It sucked gas, 8 in town and 12 on the freeway. But!, the best thing on icy roads. I like the K&N filters, ran them on all the drag cars. Little better ET with the K&N. Never ran one on the Durango, but should of. For $50-$60 can't go wrong. They do last forever.

I have a K&N on my 2000 Dakota R/T (5.9) and am very happy with it. Not sure about the 4.7 kits, but the 5.9 air intake itself has a history of cracking. There was a recall on it for that reason.

don't be suckered if you check your intake air temperature sensor (IAT) and manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) just after the KN install you will find very little gain and more to the point if you check IAT and MAP again at about 2000 to 4000 miles you will find even that small gain gone as the small surface area of the KN has plugged up faster. http://home.stny.rr.com/jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm

I had a replacement K&N filter on a 2002 ram 1500 with the 4.7L. I really could not tell and seat of the pants difference in power, and I don't think it made any difference in mialage. I'm not sure what the deal is with the 4.7, as I thought the smaller engine should get better gas mialage?
Anyhow, I have no problems with K&N filters, but I clean and re-oil them about once a year. I installed one in my 1997 Chrysler Concord 3.5L right after I bought the car new. I just got rid of it this year and it had 220,000 miles on the engine and it ran great, but the transmission was on its way out. At around 150,000 miles I did have to replace a leaking intake manifold gasket, and the intake system and throttle bodies looked pretty clean (better than several cars that run stock air filters.)

The gauze type filters are much more porous than a paper filter. They best way to measure how much more dirt is getting into your engine is with an oil analysis. Do a test before and after running a gauze filter and compare the results. For a premium air filter, check out the Amsoil line of air filters. Amsoil's Ea Air Filters’ synthetic nanofiber media removes 5 times more dust than traditional cellulose filter media alone and 50 times more dust than wet gauze filter media. More filter info.

A friend of mine bought a K&N OE replacement filter for his ’04 Dodge Ram Hemi. After installing the filter, he had a couple occurrences of the truck dieing while in rout to a destination. He took the truck in to his local dealer and they diagnosed the issue as a bad MAF sensor. Coincidence, or did the K&N filter oil cause problems with the sensor?
I also have used a K&N OE replacement air filter and although I never experienced stalling issues, I did notice the presence of a dusty residue on the filtered side of my cars induction system after using the filter for about 90k. I’ve since replaced the K&N filter with an Amsoil synthetic nanofiber filter. I’ve also read threads like THIS one at Bob Is The Oil Guy where the use of K&N air filters were linked to the cause of increased dirt in the motor oil when looking at used oil analysis numbers. From personal experience and from what I’ve read, I believe that K&N filters flow well but filter poorly. So selecting the right filter for your application becomes a balancing act of sorts; Optimal air flow vs. Optimal air filtration. In discontinuing the use of my old K&N air filter, I probably did sacrifice a couple extra ponies, but at the same time, I gained optimal air filtration and increased engine longevity.
The 2004 Arlen Spicer air filter comparison is a nice test, but is showing its age. The Amsoil #TS123 air filter used in the test is from Amsoil’s old line of foam air filters which have not been sold in years. The air filter that Amsoil now sells utilizes Donaldson Ultra-Web® nanofiber media , a much improved air filter from the foam filter it supersedes.

I always kept mine oiled and cleaned it as soon as it started looking bad, usually when the red color from the oil started to fade out.
I used to always get a gummy brown film buildup on the throttle blades and around the top of the carburetor with the k&n filter. This goo was a mixture of dust getting past the filter and gasoline vapors. When I went to the paper filter that problem has almost gone away.
gummy build up is probably from dust, and oil residue from your K&N filter, NOT from gasoline vapors--especially since cars have used multi-port injection instead of throttle body injection for quite some time now
I hear you, but my truck does have a carburetor on it.
