Doing a super six conversion and clean up of my engine. Truck is a 78 with what I think is the original slant installed in it. Anyway I was wondering what this part was and if I could remove it without a negative effect. Just not sure if its emission related or something I need.

Provided you don't have inspections, the whole thing can be removed, BUT you must plug/block the hole in the head to prevent a BIG exhaust leak.

The old backyard method is to cut off the tube a few inches from where it bolts to the head and pinch it shut. You can just see the one on the van. It was done way back by someone else.

Considering those rot and are no longer available, you might want to save it and sell to someone that does have to pass inspections.

if tube and check valve are good someone may need it to stay on the road...if not now in the future.

I take and cut the tube and pinch the end then fill short tube up with copper rtv and let that cure so it does not leak.

you can tap the head 1/2 pipe thred or maybe find a press in core plug that size and tapp it in the head to plug it.

I have used a freeze plug in the heads on a 360 with good results.

I tried Magnum Steel putty first... That lasted about a week...

I made a little tear drop shaped piece of 1/4" plate to cover that hole. No big deal.

I would clean, then tap it and use a pipe plug. Never an issue afterwards.

Thanks everyone. I will remove it then since I don't have inspections on this truck and plug the hole. Not sure if the valve works or not but I will hold into the assembley incase someone ever needs it.

I know Ma had a factory block off plate for those. I have seen one or two on late 70's, early 80's.
