I was able to get a really good discount on a new Magnaflow 3 inch stainless exhaust and went ahead and bought it. I didn't consider how loud it would be and was wondering if anyone else ran a 3 inch exhaust on their car? How loud does it really get? Do neighbors hate it?

Any feedback welcome
thanks

I had three inch pipes from the headers all the way back to the Magnaflow 14x7x3 inch in and out muffs. mounted at the rear bumper on my Duster with the 518 C.I. pump gas stroker. It was fairly quiet at part throttle inside the car and outside according to people who commented on the exhaust noises, it was a lot louder at WOT Most of the comments I got from other people on the car said they really liked the sound of the exhaust, especailly at WOT The muffs where mounted behind the rear end housing between the rear sub frames and the outer quarter panels, at the end of the exhaust pipes, they did have a 45 degree turn down around 8 inches long on the end of the muffs.IHTHs

does the 3 inch kill a bunch of torque?
hopefully not that much

Take a peek at my YouTube channel..this is a 360 motor, 3" X-pipe going into Hooker MaxFlow mufflers, tailpipes are down and out to the side behind the rear wheels and between the springs and body => MBodyCoupe - YouTube Videos

How is it overall? So far OK, I only say 'OK' because it does get loud...mind you, I am still missing the interior door panels and the roofrail weatherstrip....so all driving is done with both windows down...

a lot depends on you set-up and mufflers. I have about 11.2:1 compression and Summit cheapo mufflers, this car is LOUD. However a set of Dynomax mufflers would make it much easier on the ears. I just upgraded from 1 3/4" headers to 2" and my butt dyno doesn't see any torque difference. But I did pick up 1.6 mph in the 1/4 w/o any tuning and that was with the system capped.

my dart had 3" pipes with an x-pipe and dynomax super turbos. it was actually quite quiet...

i just made an exhaust system for the bee lately-it had two three pipes out of super comp hookers with generic straight through mufflers and they turned out under the doors. the car turned a best of 11.8 with slicks. because we are putting it on the street i did a full exhaust in three inch with a x style balance tube and two straight through mangnaflows exiting at the rear bumper. with some 6 pack adjustments i`m sure i`ve picked up 50 horses and the system is a lot quieter. if anything i think the torque is even better-maybe moved it up the powerband more. i`d consider a 4 inch for the challenger vert i`m building with a big cubed rb in it. don`t go less than 3 inch if you have a serious cube engine with some go.
all the best
frank.

My Dart has 3" exhaust with 3" SS Pypes mufflers and turn downs at the rear end. It's not to loud unless I really get after it. The headers are 1 7/8" tubes with 3 1/2" collectors, I can take the exhaust off by removing four 1/4" bolts.

The last time it was at the drag strip I ran it with and with out the exhaust. It only picked up .024 in 60', .066 et and .84 mph in the 1/8.

I run 3" w/x-pipe and Flowmaster 50's and TTI tail pipes. I think it's actually quieter than the muffler shop bent 2.5" crap I took off. I think most of the "it's gonna be loud" stuff comes from guys that run turn downs at the rear axle. If it's a street car..put tailpipes on it! I doubt you'll lose any torque with the 3".

I'd suggest an X pipe & dynamax muffs plus glasspacks alongside the rear leaf springs & if so make sure your choice of glasspack does not neck down where the end nipples are welded to the case. Someone on another forum mentioned welding a ~1.5 foot length of exhaust pipe out side ways to the ex system at the apex of each bend as it goes over the rear axle & it's capped on the end & it cancels sound waves & made a remarkable difference in quieting his system. I think it was called a Helmholtz resonator. As said a 3" system is going to be pretty loud in most cases & will need some thought put into it to deal with that. I think the best system is a 3" collector reducer to a 3" mechanical or vacuum cutout then a 2&1/2" system with restricted muffs downstream from there. Full power (& the attending noise) when you open it & quiet in normal operation. You dont need the full power till you're ready to (street) race & the money is in the hands of a neutral party then when you open it up it's too late (for them) . On a side note I believe any neckdown past the header collector flange as in a collector reducer hurts power & ANY backpressure hurts power in a 4 cycle eng & dia/length tuning is a function of the header primary tubes only

I have 3" exh with an X-pipe and Ultra-Flow mufflers out to the back of the car and it sounds nice but not to loud until I step on it. Here is a vidio clip of me leaving the cruise night. Ron

Heck no, it (less back pressure)increases torque and HP as well as it(smaller systems) can affect and limit the upper RPM the motors wants to be ran at

Thanks for all the feedback guys appreciate it! Your cars all sound awesome!

my Magnaflow 15852 exhaust system just came in today
I could not find many pics of this system on the internet so I will share them here. Maybe it will help someone decide on this kit.

the pipes that attach to the header don't have flanges so I got these 3" to 3" stainless reducers from Jeg's part number 30022

I got kit price matched from performancepeddler.com they had the best price

Mopar Muscle magazine did a comparison between a 2 1/2" system and a 3" system and they picked up 30 HP. I'm curious about this topic because I have a 2 1/2" system and they felt that 450 HP was the the point where the 3" system starts making sense. I have some cam and head upgrades in the works for the 493 in my Charger, so I might need to make exhaust changes to keep pace.

I use glass packs beside the leaf springs like Rapid Robert. Kinda like resonators. That really knocks down the harmonics inside the car and makes the exhaust just a little quieter will little to no performance impact. Plus, the glass packs are really cheap.

I am putting this in my 73 Cuda with a 340. I know its overkill for my application but I got a really good deal on it and couldn't pass it up.
It is Magnaflow 15852 exhaust kit part number and it is supposed to bolt right in with some minor welding

I have a 3 inch system on my GTX. 496, 1 7/8 headers, Dynomax super turbo mufflers. It is not as loud as I thought it would be; it's not bad at all
