I'd start by setting the initial with the "vacuum gauge" method then with that amount (#) in hand shorten the slots to get 36 total (initial + slots checked with vac adv capped). Your 383 may want more than 36 depending on quench/CR/octane. Then springs then vac adv. More on the last 2 later. bottom line you want NO pinging at any point in time & any that you can hear is WAY too much.
