Don't bash me too hard Plz? Any one ever done this and what transfer case should I run? I never tow or beat my old girl, I just want a o/d with lock up converter and no computer. OK give it to me

That's an interesting swap, but you'd have to be running some steep gears for it to be worthwhile I think. Every old ram I had with standard gearing(321-355) was hurting on the highway with overdrive. That was with 33's though mostly.

I have never done it but would use a 700r4 and a 208 or 241, buy a trans and case together is how I would do it. Make sure you get a pass side drop case. Try pirate 4x4 website for better advice, should be an easy swap.

700r4 is GM IIRC. Why not just go with a 90/93 4x4 version of the 518? Much easier to install..

I am truckless..

The ultra bell needed will cost you close to $500 plus you have to run the GM version Transfercase. You can get a 518 for under $500 and it will bolt to your t-case
You truck your money

Thx Much! , I have a adapt plate left from 1 of my old drag cars and the mope trans don't have o/d and lock up converter with no wires like you can do with a 700r4! I will never beat on it hard so it will live. I am hard core Mopar,(been drag racin these cars from 1968 until 2 years ago) however they don't have what I need for my old power wagon so here goes!

The early 518s are from my understanding just a couple wires and a switch. Youll still need to source a gm Transfercase and probably Fab a crossmember or mod currect. I plan on a 518 behind the 400 in my wifes 70s Powerwagon. She wont wheel it like I plan to mine.
Good luck

yep if you can find an early 518 they had 3 wires 1 hot and 2 grounds.
and if my memory serves me correctly they even had a 518 that had no lock up, so any 727 converter would work but they would be harder to find

and I remember reading a post where someone added a vacum switch that made the trans work normally instead of needing to manually turn the switches on and off..

I'm sort of in your shoes.
I have 31 inch tires and 3.23 gears
she just purrrrs at 65 tho
even 70 at times
75+ is when i hear her straining
i do 34 straight shot freeway miles each way every day

but i want 4.10 gears to do better from stop light to stop light
and add a518 with that overdrive to still keep her purring at 65 on the freeway

i have to find the tranny first tho
