This will be a first for me; I've only ever messed with AT. I have this 56 Plymouth with a 383 & push button on the dash/cable shifted 727 trans. The trans is acting up & I'm ready to pull a big block 4 speed from behind a 400 in a 67 Barracuda I have and try gear jammin in the older beast. I can take everything from the A-Body; pedals, shifter, etc. So, the trans & engine will go together without problem. What else do I need to finish the install? Is there anything specific to the 56 I need to convert from auto to manual?

unless you go to some sort of hydrulic clutch set up you are going to need a Z bar and all the linkage from the pedal to the Z bar and from the Z bar to the throw out bearing fork,,all of it need to be the correct lengths or it either wont reach or function properly,, do soem research on any of the mopar forums on hydrulic clutch systems adn see what people have either adapated or built,,,unless u have a 56 laying around that was a stick shift car,,,

Does a 56 have a firewall mounted master cylinder? Not sure when Mopar moved it, 54 was still under the floor.
I suspect you will end up fabricating nearly everything unless you can find a 56, V8, stick, Plymouth to get everything from. I would be surprised if the A body stiff matches up to the old Plymouth. Gene

Well, this swap may be dead in the water. As fstfish & poorboy point out, the 56 stuff is miles apart from the A-body parts. A buddy & I put a tape on the two cars tonight & measurements weren't even close. Fallback plan is to swap in a built 727 & install a floor shifter this weekend.

Thanks for the input, folks. Always nice to know help is a couple keystrokes away.

My recently acquired '56 Plymouth has a hydraulic clutch with a Wilwood MC mounted alongside the brake MC. Mine is a smallblock but I'm sure a big block truck bellhousing with a hydraulic slave would work.

dont give up on the stick,,,it would be very kool,,,,if u can adapt the A body pedals to mount under your dash,,, the rest is easy if you go with a hyd set up,,,,use a standard throw out bearing and fork,,,u can use either a pusher or puller slave cylinder on the fork, and all u have to do is mount the master cyl properly and adapt the clutch pedal linkage properly,,, i have some pics from the unit i built on my barracuda if your interested,,,

if you are going to make something you find at the junkyard work i would go with a 94 dakota pedal setup--then use the 90,s chev firewall bolt in adapter that knotches the clutch master into it (2 bolts)----if i was gonna buy something that works on everything i would go to speedway and buy a circle track brake and clutch setup....bob

Personally, IF you can find the parts modifying a factory stick setup it is usually the easiest way to go but as mentioned finding a donor car may be the biggest problem.

The main thing I wanted to mention for those of you who have not done a MOPAR auto to stick conversion is the crankshaft of the engine. My experience has been that most 50's thru 70s MOPAR engines that come from automatic equiped cars are NOT drilled for a pilot bearing or the long input nose of the Chrysler stick transmissions.

On the last few MOPARs I've rebuilt I had the machine shop drill the crank before they sent it out to be ground just so I had the option down the road.

there is no neeed to drill the crank, you can use a dakota or jeep bearing, it goes in the big hole same hole as an automatic convertor register hole, you cut the input shaft on the trans to the correct length, thats how its done from the factory on a stick shift dakota and ram and jeep

On the contrary, my '86 318 has a hole in the back of the crank almost two inches deep from the flange face. No problem at all fitting a manual tranny with the TC pilot bearing.

Not exactly, the factory didn't lop the end of the input shaft off. The trans used was built correctly for the application. If you choose to use another trans you will have to bob the input shaft, but I won't as I look at it as a 1/2 donkey way of doing things.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

i was just offering an option,,many many have done it already,,,the bearing stil supports the input shaft
