Hi everyone, the tires are constantly scraping the wheel wells of my 72 Challenger and I need help figuring out the right wheel & tire size. The car currently is lifted in back; she has 15" rims; front tires are P235/60R15 & rear are P275/60R15.

Will lower profile tires on the current 15" rims be enough to end the scraping, or is it best to get the original 14" rims + lower-profile tires?

Also, do I need to lower the car back to her original stance, or is it okay to leave the lifts in?

Thanks so much for your help!

Is it scraping both front and rear? Fender lips or inside? 235's usually fit on the front if wheel backspace is dialed in. 225's almost always fit. 275 is pushing it on the rear. 245 would be a safe choice on correct wheels.

I would definitely stay with 15" or bigger wheels... tire selection is better and they look better.

A little more details please. I have larger tires on both my cars, I believe.

I run 275/60/15 rear with 4.5 backspace and 245/60/15 front with 4.25 backspace on both of my e-bodies with no issues. As stated above, what are the rest of the details?

Thank you everyone for your replies!! It seems to me like it's scraping the fender lips most, rather than the wheel well, because I see grooves sliced into the tires from the fender's edge. The scraping happens more often on the passenger side (whether I have a passenger or not) and happens either when I turn (especially to the left) or when I bottom out on a bump.

You are running 28" tall tires, which is fine, but is on the higher side, so fender scraping can happen, but need to know what wheels are on the car, it makes all the difference. I have the wider 275s on my rear too and they have a ton of clearance, but I have factory rally wheels, 7" wide I believe (I wouldn't suggest 7" wide wheel). 8 or 9 inch wide wheels with proper factory backspace like 4.5 or 5" should be good on the rear. I'm not sure about the front, but if you are running some aftermarket wheels, they could all be pushed out and causing your problems. (sorry if you already mentioned your wheel type), I don't think lowering the body would help, probably make it worse.

The Challenger came with vintage Eagle Alloys on it. They are the same style as the current model #055, shown here: http://www.aewheel.com/eagle_alloy_wheels.cfm?id=1942&cat=472
...but the current ones are 16" wheels, while mine must be a 15" version of these since that's my tire size. Also, my center caps look different; they still say Eagle Alloys, but the font is more old-fashioned and they are rounded, rather than flat-sided like the ones shown on the AE site.

Classic sign of incorrect backspace. These tires will fit fine with 4.25 to 4.5" backspace on the wheels. Odds are your wheels lack this amount. It could be these are even Perrles Tyre generic wheels with Eagle caps or any number of combinations. I think the standard spacing on a lot of these types of wheels is 3.5 to 4, depending on the width.

Ohhhh, okay. So it's my wheels that aren't the right fit for the car's body, and not the tire sizes I'm currently using...is that right? So I just need a different set of 15" wheels with the correct backspace to solve the problem. (Sorry if I haven't understood correctly; I have no insight at all into wheels/tires.)
