Chrysler tech until Nov. of last year here. No way to read codes without a scanner, end of story. Not sure what the turn the key three times with the door open trick is, that makes no sense.
If you're thinking its like the older pre-obd cars where you can jump the pins in the data link connector and read them like morse code that is incorrect. Only way to get the codes is to get into the module that generated it.
You need a Chrysler DRB or Star Scan/Snap On Modis with a Chrysler key or like said above, a parts store generic, but sounds like that is not an option. Really, unless the MIL is blinking, (clogged cat or something) its probably not a huge issue. Probably EGR or Evap related.
Whats the car doing, anything noticeable?

the scanner at work made an appearance, we have one guy that will take it for weeks on end that I didn't think to ask , plus he said we have a sign out sheet and he had it signed out , I didn't know about the sheet ...
anywho , you don't know about cycling the key ?
I have a 2000 ram 2500 , think it worked on my 98 also and I know about the pre ODBII cars and the check engine light flashing, anyway with my ram you cycle the key 3 times fast and leave the key on the last time and it shows the codes stored in the digital odometer.
The door open thing was just because when I did it I had the door open as the woman that owns the car was curious to see what I was doing to get the code. I was unsure if it would show in the odometer or on the display that said the door was ajar so that is why I mentioned the door and I didn't try closing the door and retrying, instead I hunted down the scanner.
We have an Actron scanner and its nice that it tells you what the code is instead of having to hunt it down , 0304 , ($10 ???) , cylinder 4 misfire. It happened the night before she went on vacation last week, she just got back last night, I didn't bother to drive it. I told her to have her husband change the plugs since it has 130k and she does not know when, or if, the plugs have been changed, if it stays on to change the coil pack.
thanks ...

Huh, learned something new. Never heard of that trick before even with training. '04 is different architecture from 2000.
Anyway, before you throw parts at it, swap the coil from #4 to #2 and see if the misfire moves. (That is if its C.O.P.) Coils go bad, I used to replace them regularly. Lucky its #4, PITA to reach behind for the odd cylinders. If it stays on #4, you might have a more involved problem.
What is it a 3.5/4.0?
Tell her to dump that P.O.S. soon.

I just did a 2002 Ram last week and the codes can be retrieved same as always but instead of the flashes , It gives you the actual P code in the digital odomemter display
My 2000 gave the P code , I had an 89 D150 , that flashed the check engine light

the back plugs are the easy ones to get , just replaced them , it's the front plugs UNDER the manifold that I have to do still
Moved the coil but it hasn't happened again , plugs were almost twice the gap they should have been ...
