I know engines require a special method for storing, what about transmissions. I have a slightly used 727 that needs nothing and I want to store it for a couple years. Drain it, don't drain it? Want to keep it in good working order while being stored. Thanks.

I think Chrysler still offers that plastic plug kit ... that has covers for the output and input shafts ....and if you want ....make up a wood cover for the dipstick hole if you want to put away the dip-stick itself. NO NEED to drain it ....IMO.

I would drain it. No matter how careful you are it will make a mess and leaving that fluid in there serves no purpose to keep the upper moving portions from flash rusting because its all eventually going to drain down into the pan and leave nothing but residual film coating anyways.

A standard wine bottle cork fits the dipstick hole in the case about perfectly so I discovered recently.

best would be to store it in a dry heated environment at a steady temp. temp fluctuations that drop below the dew point make moisture condense & form on metal. Wrap it in several layers of thick garbage bags just for the oil drippings but keep the end open so as to not trap moisture inside then put it in a wooden box & paint the box nice then use it in your living room as a foot rest or coffee table. When you ressurect it it'll look & function as good as the day it went in (ex for the seals) just like an artifact coming out of the Egyptian pyramids with the dry air there

Robert, if you knew what my living room looked like you'd know it'd fit right in without the box

I gotta figure this out. Hate to sell it because it only has about 10K on it and cost me a grand. Super firm shifting HD unit, but I just don't have a car to use it in right now. May just end up trying craigslist since it's too big to ship, but I'd really like to keep it until I need it. Thanks.

Yeah I'd just sit on it till your next build. You have way too much into it to take a big loss

I was thinking of using an old tire to sit it on.
